1987 300d Auto Drops to first on low speed coast
So before I begin that other than this issue, the transmission shifts fine, goes into gear as expected and this issue has plagued me for the last 60k miles and has not gotten any worse.
Driving down the highway, decelerating to get on an exit ramp, once the engine goes below 1100 rpm, the transmission will simply drop into no gear and coast. You apply throttle while on the exit ramp and it will go into 1st and the revs will race. It gets worse on hot days and only does it when the transmission is at operating temperature. I believe it's a pressure drop somewhere but unsure where. I don't believe it's caused by wear because it has been doing this since I got it at 100k miles and it now has 160 or so. Again, has not gotten any worse. My 2 work around are to give it a shot of throttle to get pressure up and get it into higher gear quickly or dropping it into 3rd gear on the selector to give the engine higher revs. Would boosting the pressure on the side of the transmission help the situation? I'm not ready to replace the transmission since everything else about it is fine. |

Have you checked the kickdown switch and solenoid on the transmission? An issue with that might cause it to trigger the first gear kickdown.

As I read it, it’s not holding in first gear like it’s downshifting all the way to neutral.
