How to remove glove box door?

Dumb question, but searched and could not find how to remove the glove compartment door on an 83 W123 without mangling something. I need to switch one that the latch actually works correctly for one that needs to be jiggled endlessly to make it stay shut. Or better, is there a way to fix the ones that wont stay shut? Seems that most of them have this problem.

Thanks!

Usually it's the spring in the latch that that fails which causes the latch to not latch.

I think from the factory the glovebox hinges are fastened with some of those 2 pin security bit screws.

Post Glove Box Door Removal

I cheated and ever so gently pried the left side rubber out of the dash on the limiting strap ~ this allowed *just* enough clearance to work it free, allowing the entire door to be tipped slightly and removed .

That may well be the “official” method to do this, and is probably the reverse of the way they put it together in the factory.

I found that the door part was fine, it was the keeper on the dash that was worn.

Post Glovebox Door

That piece is properly called the 'striker' .

Were you able to find a new one or had to make do with used ? .

Unscrewed security screws: Then what?

using pointy little pliers, i easily removed the 2 security nuts, but that only made the hinges looser, far from removing the door. Why is this so tricky. Did the Fuhrer store gold bricks in his Mercedes' glove box ?

You need a tool called a pin wrench for those nuts but as you've discovered, they don't really facilitate removing it from the car .
