W126 G1/W123 steering wheel in W126 G2

I’ll make no assumption that the airbags work on my 91 350SD. I personally like the look and feel of the steering wheels in my w123 cars, which I assume are the same size and materials as in the G1 W126.

In the long run I’d be considering removing the PS airbag to put back in a glovebox (if there are two things I don’t like about my SD, it’s the lack of a glove box and the lack of an antenna control), and ditto for the steering wheel.

Is this doable/has anyone done it??

The wheel will fit with no issue mechanically. You will have to transfer the slip ring assembly from the SD's wheel to the W123 wheel and put a dummy resistor across the airbag terminals to keep the SRS system happy.

Not that anyone plans to experience a collision that requires the deployment of an airbag, but I for one am glad that the two collisions I was involved in were in cars equipped with airbags. The first was a 2001 PT Cruiser, and I am sure I would have been severely injured had the car NOT had airbags. The second was in my 350SDL. Again, I can imagine that I would have needed an ambulance (or coroners van) ride, had the airbags not deployed. The seat belt tensioners are also part of the SRS, and play a big part in the safety of the occupants. I would strongly advise NOT removing/disabling any part of the SRS. It is a valuable part of the many safety features built into these cars......Rich

Dont deny the value of seat belt tensioners.

My car has a sticker that recommended airbag changeout in 2000. I assume it wasnt done. I have a working SRS light, but it doesnt come on - no faults. But Id also not count on the airbags working in a collision.

Your insurance might not pay off if you disable safety devices and have a loss.
