Turbocharger question

1987 300TD , 603 engine with Garrett turbocharger- are there any gaskets in turbocharger assembly on hot side? Turbine housing with cover with waste gate flopper plus bunch of pieces after with big bellow- any gaskets there between housings and adapters?

There is Mercedes parts sites like everythingbenze that has exploded views of various parts on Mercedes. That would tell you.

Generally the exhaust outlet on most turbochargers has a tapered lip on it and the expansion joint slides into it and it has a thin lip also. The Clamp that holds them together has a tapered area on both sides that squeezes the 2 together. Carbon build up does the rest of the sealing.

So you can tell by the type of clamp that is on it. Also you need to take a wire brush and scrub off all of the rust on the treads on the camp and apply penetration oil and let that soak in and re-apply as you feel is needed. I have attempted to remove 3 of those turbo clamps at the Junk Yard and snapped the threaded shaft off of the clamp due to rust.

It is also helpful to heat the Nut with a propane torch.

If you turbo has the clamps as in the attached picture there is no gasket in that area. I don't know about the wastegate.

Note handle the expansion joint carefully as they get sort of brittle over time. It is not unusal for them to crack in normal use.

If your turbo has a bolted on flange there may be a gasket between it and the Turbo but if you are rebuilding you are going to separate the exhaust Housing from the Bearing Housing and you won't need to remove that flange because when the Exhaust Housing is off you can pull out the Turbine Wheel.
