'85 300D turbo removal - 4 17mm nuts

So the service manual blithely states "unscrew 4 fastening nuts at exhaust driven turbocharger".

I've gotten the top 2 loose with a box end, but how the heck are you supposed to loosen the bottom two? There doesn't seem to be room from the bottom. Maybe a stubby box, but how to get the required torque to loosen?

There is "S" and sort of flat "U" shaped Obstruction Wrenches. Or you may need to get to the bottoms from under the Car.
Where the Turbo Mounts is not an area where the torque is critical. If you think that is an issue take a look at the Manifolds and try to find the torque in the Manual and how to torque them.On my 617.952 I removed the Manifold Studs and found that the part that threads into the Cylinder head only as about 4 solid treads and that if you could find a torque you could not torque them to very much with only 4 threads.

those bottom two are a PIA...i removed them before from the top...it's possible but i tried like 10 different combinations of tools to find the right one and I can't remember which one finally worked.

I finally got them. One of the lower nuts was too close to the iron casting to allow any kind of box end in there without grinding it down. But a 3/8 17mm socket fits on there. All my ratchets were too wide, but a 3/8 breaker fit. Then, I put a cheater pipe on it and managed to orient it from underneath where I could get about 2 degrees of turn- enough to break it free.

The other nut I was able to get with a 17mm 3/8 socket and a wobble extension. I broke it free from the top with a break & ratchet.

Now- to rebuild the turbo. Thanks for the advice.

Ok- bolts off. Now I'm trying to free up the flex duct. Both clamps are totally off and penetrant applied. They don't want to break free. And I can't quite pull it away from the intake manifold enough to get that short tube out of the picture so I can pull forward.
I wonder if I'll have this much fun when I re-install...

There's a support bracket you need to undo to release the flex duct .
