How do I translate wiring diagram part numbers into Mercedes part numbers?
 

If, on a scan or looking at a wiring diagram, I come up with a part number, how do i translate that into a Mercedes part number? For example, relay K75 on my CDI, how, without actually looking at the part, can I find the part number?

You have to be quite careful with this - the ID number says what it is descriptively but the wiring diagram will not know the subtle differences such as round plug / square plug or which exact part number.


Mercedes are very good at documentation - the only way to get exactly the correct part (as when it left the factory) is to use EPC

So how do I connect the dots between, say, the part that shows up in a fault code...like my K75 relay...and the EPC?

This is a weakness in the Mercedes system. The wiring diagram and EPC don’t really cross reference. You need to identify the part in EPC from its verbal description on the schematic. EPC is the only PN source, other than what’s printed on the old part.

For the most recent part numbers (a few change and get replaced - most don't) you need to get a subscription via www.startekinfo.com


It used to be free in the US of A - but I understand you guys now have to pay too.


Otherwise there is ebay where people sell pirated downloaded versions - I've never bought one so I can't tell if they are good, reliable, or even safe


Another alternative is to look out for parts books - they do exist - fairly rare but have period correct numbers for the cars when they were released. Like I said some of the parts in these books will have been updated with different numbers - but it is something that if you were to go to the dealer with they'd be able to tell you the latest number.


In principle I think the best alternative is to make friends with your local MB parts counter and ask them to quote for what ever you need. Despite what many people the dealer isn't always that bad - OK sometimes they are silly dreadful - but I think you might be surprised how often Febi junk is more expensive than the dealer part...

...final option - join an official Mercedes club - you can then get "free" access to EPC so long as you pay your club subscription.

MBCA (MB Club of America) membership ($180/3 yrs) does not give you free EPC but you can get a 10 to 15 percent discount on parts at the dealership.

I was able to get the wholesale parts discount at my local dealer by giving them enough business (bought one used car there, multiple repairs I couldn’t handle myself, lots of miscellaneous parts). This has made them competitive with online and I don’t have to pay shipping. If they don’t have it they can get it within a couple of days and then I stop by and pick it up.

In SC we have to pay sales tax over the counter or if it is untaxed online we have to declare and pay it on our state income tax return, so there is no advantage either way for us on that front.

That's a shame - the official clubs in Europe do / seem to. I'm about to join one here specifically for the EPC access.




I used that for years but I've found the Russian site to which that site links is not as complete as the one they used to use. It changed about 3 or 4 years ago. Pitty.

Thanks Stretch! In the past 9 years have tried twice on eBay, once a CD & download both were a bust.
