Problems with paint

I have a 1983 300SD painted silberblau-silver blue, with painted bumpers.

I bought this car from a forum member's father and the car had original paint on it.

I took the car to a guy to get a quarter panel ding fixed and later, to get the rear bumper repainted.

The problem is that the silver bumper came back BROWN (anthracit)
I know this is wrong but to get the guy to repaint, I have to get something from Mercedes that shows that the paint supplier gave the guy the wrong color (I just took the plastic bumper over to save time and space).

I need the info from Mercedes.

The local dealers won't help.

The car has a paint code tag near the radiator but I also want to get info based on the VIN.

I am thinking of going to the Classic Center and talking to Tom Hanson. Any other ideas?

I can send him proof of ownership.

Your thoughts, please.

What's the paint code it is meant to be according to the tag?

With code in hand you can usually find a picture of the example on the interweb - is that enough proof?

Otherwise there are copies of the original colour selection charts on the internet too

Run the VIN through a website VIN decoder, it'll tell you what the original options were, including paint codes.

This one: https://www.datamb.com returns the correct results for both my SDL and the Euro SL, so I'd think it was accurate enough.

In the absence of a paint code, perhaps the car has been repainted in a non-standard color.

My body man took the fuel door off and took it to the paint shop where it could be matched.

That looks like a US VIN which isn't the same as a Mercedes one.

I'd expect your VIN to be something like WDB?126120??????

300SD is a 126.120 chassis type - that's the one that in EPC will come with the colour code from the factory - the alternative is to post information from the ID tag

I gave the body shop the VIN and they agreed it was silver blue because they had done a little bit of work on it for me, previously.

Here are the "VINs" for the car:

FIN WDB12612012024313
VIN WDBCB20A3CB024313

The FIN version follows the 14 digit VIN which was used until all world VINs were homologated to 17 characters using three additional letters indicating country of origin. WDB = West Germany Daimler-Benz

I don't know what paint 5 32 is, but I called MBUSA Classic Center and they told me the other paint for the cladding and bumper is 7175 matte grey.

I have all this info and am going with the bumper to the painter's today to sort this out.

I posted the list below a while back.

Any chance this car used to be 2 tone? At least in the early 90's MB used 2 tone but ended this in the mid 90's. I'm not sure how far back that goes.

My 97 C280 is 702 Smoke Silver ( gold tint ) with bumper rub strips that MB calls 7176 Shell Gray according to the data card. The color is somewhat darker than tan but not quite brown. The car had been repainted at some point so I don't know if the tan / brown is the factory color.

https://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/318879-whats-my-bumper-trim-color-code.html

Here is my list of color codes, not sure what years but they look to be late 80's and up.
