2005 E320 CDI creaking noise when turning steering wheel

Hi all,

I am experiencing a creaking noise from the front suspension that is most pronounced when turning the steering wheel while the car in stationary.

It also is affected by the outside ambient temperature as it completely goes away when it is 40 degrees or lower outside and returns when the temperatures are higher.

Is this possibly a dry bushing?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Jack it up and inspect it. Everything else is just speculation.

If there’s no noise with the wheels off the ground, set the front wheels on greased linoleum tiles (pair of tiles face to face with grease in between) so you can turn the steering wheel with the engine off and listen more closely for noise.

On a W211 there are multiple ball joints in the front suspension that likely need replacement if they have never been replaced before.

Thanks for all of the replies, I'll take your advice and try to narrow it down..... How difficult is it to replace ball joints on a CDI?

Anyone ever do this before?

Upper ball joint is stupid easy, just 3 torx screw.2 lower control arms (including one ball joint) just unbolt and replace the whole thing. Then there's one last ball joint pressed into the spindle which can only be removed after removing both lower control arms. That one will need to be pressed. All the other ball joints can be done with a conventional ball joint tool.
