Junkyard dog head removal question

I’m taking the head off an om606 diesel this weekend. I don’t have the timing chain guide rail removal tool anymore, it got loaned and never returned and lost. Why I quit loaning tools out. Regardless, I know the bolt and washer method but never did it.

I did however read that a couple guys butchered up the bottom pin above the vacuum pump using the washer and bolt method so I’m not sure I wanna get stuck at the junkyard using easy outs and a drill and possibly butchering a head.

If I do what I hate to do and is a total junkyard dog removal and cut the timing chain with a grinder, will I be able to slide the head off with the timing chain rails attached to the head?

I don't know but I got a late modelMO603 head for $45 after some boob damaged that pin and gave up on it, the machine shop I used to touch up the valves replaced the mangled pin FREE so it's not any big deal I think .

bolt & washers trick works well

takes a bunch more time than using dedicated tool, but is essentially free

i seem to recall using a short socket as spacer as pins start coming out

We’re your guides still attached with the head?

"Junkyard dog head removal question"

A subject line I had to read twice and consider for a second.

Here’s a video of the bolt and spacer method - https://youtu.be/3d62NY4AxP4

On a 603 the fixed rail is pinned to the head and block. I think a 606 is similar.

Wooo thanks guys. Makes it look like cake with the bolt method should be easier than the tool itself

Yes ~ the end was all battered from being hit with a hammer or something, why I let the machine shop handle removing it : I didn't want to make things worse or damage the head .

I just watched the three minute video and that's what I'd have done, standard shop trick .

You need to clean your pin threads and be sure to select your bolt so it uses all the threads in the pin. If you don't it will strip out the threads. It works just fine.

That lower pin is really tight. Yes, sockets and washers. In addition, use a high strength bolt like a 10.9. You will have to get on it before it pops. Good work! A tough job in a junkyard in the winter.
