Half a million mile cold start

Been sitting since it needs a valve and has a misfire at the moment. Was curious because I never started it below 30 degrees, but fired up first glow cycle in 16 degrees in this nasty weather. I’d have to say besides the head issue the engine must be pretty solid. It has been sitting for weeks.

Definitely a sign of good compression and a otherwise strong motor I’d say right? It’s my om606 e300 by the way.

Or good glow plugs.

What's the compression of the engine?

Not sure. Have not checked yet. I’d think even with good glow plugs if it had worn compression it wouldn’t start as easy. There was a 7.3 powerstroke with about 380k on it that was a work truck for a construction company. It would barely start in 80 degrees. Took about 5 minutes to get it to start. It had good glow plugs but was heavily used. I hated starting that truck.

Thumbs up Cold Weather Starting

Yes, that is a general indicator of good compression .

So far I've only had the experience of starting )M616 & 617's in freezing temps, no colder, all started fairly quickly, surprising me as several were fairly worn out but all were well maintained and had good glow plugs .

Following the correct cold weather staring drill written on the blue card provided with every W123 Diesel car, helped a lot .

Glad it rarely gets below 40* F in California ! .

Zero complaints. Was looking for a second opinion to see if anyone else thought it was decent. And yes it still does have a cylinder misfire coming from the exhaust side of the head. I’m extremely impressed it runs as well as it does. I’m acquiring parts just haven’t gotten the time or weather to fix it.

Thumbs up Impressive Cold Start

Oh, yes, I think that's great .

I didn't hear the miss .

One of my OM617-T's has a low compression cylinder (GRRRrrr) so it occasionally has a few misses when I start it below 50* F or so but it always runs on all five cylinders, just rocks a bit @ hot idle and forces oil out past the oil cap, this grates on my last nerve as I dropped $4,500.00 + having the block re sleeved and so on about 20,000 + miles ago and I'd hoped I was past all that .

Sigh .

Nothing like the power and sound of an InLine 6 cylinder engine ! .

I keep wanting to cut the muffler off my brother's '87 300SDL because I know it'd sound sweet and not loud .

As long as no oil / coolant mixing I'd think you an drive it until Spring when you have time / $ and inclination to do the job .

Given how quick and easy it started up with a double glow, I bet it would have lit off with just one. Tough engine!

Real tough engine! I think it would’ve went first glow it almost always does. That was the coldest I started it so I was just a tad cautious. I’m excited to tear the head off. I’ve been toying with the idea of finding a used engine with lower mikes and rebuilding this one properly. Or do I just tear the head down and see what’s wrong with it and have it machined. The car is well worth it. I’ve put a lot of hours into rust repair and the paint and interior are very nice. Plus a full rebuilt front suspension.

With me being new to these cars and knowing little about them, it sounds pretty good. May I ask what type and weight oil you’ve been running in it? Mine is at 188k and is dreaming of 500k, lol.
