Radio Antenna
I have been catching up on some much needed maintenance on my 85sd this winter. I pulled the seats and center consuel out then cleaned carpets and coffee out of the counsel etc. Then began replacing some switches and bulbs and then began putting everything back, that’s what brings me to my problem.
The radio: I have it hooked up and it plays fine but when I power it up the antenna doesn’t pop up like alwaysIhave checked double checked everything hooked up. “NO Antenna” What gives the wife ain’t gonna be happy she gots to have the noise. Me I prefer the beautiful sound of that amazing 617. Thoughts Please greazer2b |

Is the antenna switch set to 'up?'
I know that's kinda insulting but it's solved my antenna problem a few times.

Is the antenna motor connected? My ‘83 SD developed an overnight battery drain that I solved by disconnecting the antenna motor.

Inadvertently knocked the antenna motor wire off the back of the radio?

Or possibly pulled loose from the back of the antenna switch.

When was the last time the antenna motor was serviced? I took mine apart tonight and it needs a good cleaning, and a new mast. If it's the original antenna then they aren't overly complicated, anyone savy with electronics should be able to figure it out pretty easily. Main thing is make sure the electric motor drive gear isn't gummed up.

Thanks for the reply’s, the antenna is fine also everything is attached to radio.
The switch maybe suspect I will check again today. I just don’t understand why when I push the ON button the antenna doesn’t pop up like 4” it always has. Of course when I want to extend I use the antenna switch, but radio always pops up that antenna when turned on. Is it possible I damage the unit in side some how ? Radio works fine. Would a bad antenna switch prevent the radio from popping up the antenna as I have described? Thx again greazer2b |

The radio remembered the last antenna position. After antenna service I had the same issue. So I retracted it completely with button, turned the car off. Then turned the car on, adjusted it to desired length with button, turned the car off. On next ignition on, it extended as much as I wanted. Maybe it's all nonsense, but it worked. |

Thanks for the reply’s. No I haven’t found a solution yet worked a little yesterday on it verified antenna switch is good.
I just can’t figure what happened, One minute everything fine next a problem, the reason for removing the console was to replace shifter bushings and linkage bushing. Then while Im there syndrome kicks why not remove the CCU and replace a few bulbs, so “WHALA” here I am It’ll have to wait we had 10*for a high today and we have winter storm warning for tomorrow night through Sunday evening “5-7” snow and high winds causing blizzard like conditions. Been rough winter here in Des Moines. Shop is nice I just got into it back in Nov but haven’t got to the insulation yet just been doing the propane heater thing. greazer2b Last edited by greazer2b; 02-15-2019 at 06:16 PM.
