OM617 Swap:Even More Questions! (video)

Hello (I'm assuming) Gentlemen!

Thanks to everyone who has offered advice for this project thus far.

Here's what's going on: Harvesting engine from '84 300SD, installing into '76 W115.

Seems I always have more questions, and I thought this time it might be easier to shoot a short video. That way I can point to things and explain what I'm confused about (a lot, it seems!)

If you could take the time to watch the video, and answer any questions, share any tips or pass on any knowledge, that would be awesome! General comments are always appreciated too.

Thanks for taking a look!

To remove the torque converter there is a small plate on the bottom of the engine, facing the back. I believe it is plastic on OM617s. Pop it out and spin the torque converter around, you will find 3 sets of 2 bolts (I believe they are 12mm). That is what holds on the torque converter, you will then be able to remove the 12mm 12 point bolts that hold the flex plate to the crank shaft. Use an impact socket and an impact wrench for them, they are on there tight.

Max, ltm:

Actually the access for the flexplate-to-convertor bolts is on the front face of the intermediate plate (IP), just above the lower edge of the IP, and may or may not have a cover plate or plug.

The oil at back of engine, coming from head gasket. There is a oil drain there.
Look close, more seepage below head. Leaks most when engine cold, while running
Easier to do now! Done a few.

As for the head gasket, I found peachparts/pelican parts has a good instructional DIY https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Mercedes-W123/51-ENGINE-Head_Gasket_Replacement/51-ENGINE-Head_Gasket_Replacement.htm

Read through that, and I'm now ready to tackle it!

I would do the head gasket and check the timing chain for wear. Relatively cheap insurance. Have the head checked for straightness at a machine shop.

ltm:

You have before you an opportunity to create quite a hole; you may wish to put down your shovel for a while, and examine the excavation plans. Prior to getting into internal engine work, do a test fitting of the engine in the W115 engine bay. Does the oil pan clear the crossmember?, does the intake manifold and turbo clear the inner fender-well? The turbo 617 was not installed in the W115 chassis, and the N/A 617 required a unique crossmember.

I'm waiting for someone to mention removing the ALDA, the EGR or something of the kind.

Neither of those things require removing the head, which is implied as something necessary to perform this mod in hercules' post
