When it rains it pours W123 no start & god awful W115 rear wheel noise

82 240D Automatic will not even attempt to turn over. Wifes daily

Brand new battery, starter was working OK (although making some funny noises)

Symptoms, turn key - glow plug light illuminates, no crank - no start. No audible clicking.

Could the starter have failed so suddenly? Grounds appear clean and I bypassed the NSS so i know its not that.

Thoughts?

Coincidentally ... ! my 72 220D started making this god awful noise form the right rear wheel. it's not the axle, I disconnected it and pushed it out of the hub. So it has to be either wheel bearing or brake related?

Sound turns into a loud humming at speed but does not change pitch under ANY circumstances as I would think a wheel bearing would. No difference under turning, braking or anything.

Heres the link to the video clip on youtube: https://youtu.be/ggDYyml1bnw

thoughts?

thanks!

Take a 2x4 and rap on the starter a few times. Not too hard. If it starts, then it is probably your starter solenoid.

Check the terminals on the 240D as well. I spent the better part of a day off trying to figure out why I had a no crank no start condition, but would get glow plugs and headlights intermittently.

I brushed against the battery terminal and the headlights cane on. It had enough of a connection that little stuff like the radio, glow plugs, and headlights would come on, but couldn't handle the current draw from the starter.

Unless when you grab the rear hub and you here it thunk when you push in and pull out you will need a dial indicator to tell if there is too much end play that would indicate the rear wheel bearings are failing.

Also noise is hard to pin point. How about the Pinion Shaft Bearing as a source of the noise. It is supposed to have a preload on it. If it goes in and out at all it would be suspect.

Then there is the Drive Shaft Support bearing.

If you safely block the front wheels and raise the rear (on jack stands, the) wheels off the ground you can put it in gear and see if you can hear and locate where the noise is coming from.

Sounds like it could be a bad cv joint. They will make noises depending on rear end load. When pushed past the worn spot they vibrate a bit. Also some play when twisting the half shaft in back and up and down. end play is ok at least a quarter of an inch but should not go up and down at all if grabbed with no load on the drive train.

On the 240d- check this out maybe?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9y5IB250MY

Mine did this a while back.

The electrical connector of the ignition ("ignition switch" IIRC) is held on by three standard screws. Those had backed most of the way out, and it allowed the metal "ears" that allow the ignition assembly to mate & turn with the ignition switch to back out enough to snap them off. So basically, i was turning the key, and it felt OK, but it wasn't actually firing the starter off.

Food for thought. I would check stuff like the NSS and starter wiring first. See if you can jump the starter off from the engine bay.

But my situation was weird, so i figured i would share

just to update for anyone reading this in the future.

240D - needed a starter. I replaced it and it has been starting up great.

220D needs a wheel bearing - removed the wheel, axle, caliper, and rotor and spun the hub.. definitely needs a bearing.
