1995 E300 diesel transmission question

Hello, thanks in advance for any info you can give.

I just bought a 1995 E300 diesel with a bad transmission. I have been looking for a new one but its turning out to be more difficult than I had thought it would be.

My question is what other models from that have a transmission that is compatible with my car. I believe mine is a 722.435.

Thanks!

Try Sun Valley transmissions for the cost of a rebuilt. A few years ago, they were only about $1500 and came with a very generous warranty. Same place can probably also tell you which other transmissions might be compatible.

Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market is a good search engine for finding a used trans.

Same box as my 96 S124.

For the last couple of years kept an eye out for a decent one with no luck, that said recent improvements have made the search less important.

These were fitted to mostly late 300TD S124's coupled to a matched differential, not sure if they appeared on saloons or not due to rarity.

This is in the UK so maybe different your side of the pond.

What's the issue, have you done the usual fault finding vacuum wise?

The transmission shifts into 3rd but only once it revs past 4,000 rpm and it wont go into 4th at all.

I have not looked at it at all but will be soon. What vacuum lines do you speak of?

The shift is controlled by two mechanisms, bowden cable which monitors accelerator position and vacuum line via modulator, engine load/speed.

What sort of miles/service history - have you tried changing the ATF?

Search for bowden cable, plenty of tips on adjustment.

Don't underestimate wrong fluid levels or a mis-adjusted bowden cable.

I have not done anything yet as I just got the car last weekend. The trans fluid level looks good and the fluid looks ok.

I do have some service records and it does show that the trans fluid was changed at around 80k miles. Now it has 180k. Not more paperwork showing another trans fluid change.

I am going to take a look at the vcv and bowden cable soon. I guess a trans fluid change is a good place to start but I will say it still looks red.

Any tips on the inspecting the vacuum and vcv?

Sounds like you may have a kick-down switch that is sticking? It is under the accelerator pedal, make sure it is free to pop back up.

if you are looking for used, you could always check out car-part.com, its a nationwide junkyard locator. I have had good success on transmissions from there or on ebay if they are guaranteed for a certain amount of time. Of course, if you dont want to be changing it out anytime soon, then the best thing would be to get a rebuilt one.

Hope you get her up and running soon. Have a great day.
