sunroof woes
[/IMG]Hi all,
Prepping for paint and addressing some sunroof rust, I had a heck of a time opening the roof today, namely caused by the sunroof seal curling under at the rear and freeing up the rear seal retention plate (5) in work instruction . It looks like this plate may bave been attached to the roof via spot welds or mini rivets per the drawing, either way I can only find one (center) that was used, and the whole thing is free and loose right now. In order to insert the sunroof seal, thise piece needs to be mounted back to the roof. I was planning on using a bead of jb weld the length of the piece, it is molded to fit a pressed shape on the underside of the roof, so the seal retainer will locate itself in the right place. Has anyone else been faced with a similar situation? What was your solution, is jb weld up to the task? Opinions welcomed.

What procedure in the service manual are you talking about?

Procedure 77-130 gasket and holding rails removal installation
The rear sunroof gasket rail item number 5 in the associated diagram. My key question, is how is this fixed to the roof? The diagram seems to show a rivet of some sort, the seal holding rail has 9 holes in it to afix to, but only the center hole (center of sunroof ) shows any signs of being used, all others are clean, no signs of use. This holding rail makes the bottom side if the channel that the seal is pressed into. Just surprised MB would use only one rivet to hold in place. TIA

Well to close out this thread, I expoxied the rreal seal retainer to the roof using jb weld, and it is firmly afixed and ready for a new seal installation. Apparently onlt 3 smal spot welds were used by MB to affix this retainer originally, and given tine and stress those will likely fail. By using epoxy to reattach, it does not interfere with the side rails, meaning those are freely removable independent of the rear rail.
Thanks to all, hopefully this willbhelp someone in the future
