Cut Open Hengst OM617 Oil Filter

Previously had a thread on a Mann filter I cut open. Wanted to compare the Hengst to it. This one was in place at least seven years and 3000 miles, and I put around 300 miles on it before changing.

Media and potting was in perfect shape and perfectly fine for that time in use and contact with oil. No concerns.

Same cotton gin type material, this one has louvers in the bypass section instead of holes, and no landscape fabric type material to keep the bypass section from coming out. Not that there’s any practical chance of losing material from the bypass section given how tight pack and intertwined it is. It’s just not practical.

I didn’t get this one as far apart as the last due to time. Still it’s well made and no concerns with its use.

This has generally been common knowledge for well over a decade.

My interest was more the condition of the full flow element after sitting for so long. And it was just fine.

It just satisfies a bit of curiosity.

I remember when I was a kid taking broken stuff apart just to see. It was not that I believed I could fix it.

Without being there to actually get a close look and feel it of course I am not sure. But, to me from the pictures it looks like the full flow paper is kind of deteriorated. The give away would be if the material ripped easy when you tore it.
To me it also looked clogged up a bit.

Shocked!, shocked!!, shocked!!! I tell you I was - the shop manual prescribes 10,000 km oil/filter change intervals "but at least once a year with year-round multigrade oils and at least twice a year with all other multigrade or with single grade oils".

It took a lot of work to tear the media away to even rip that sample... like, pry with a screwdriver and pull hard. Certainly did t tear easily.

Ive taken apart other filters, much less time in oil, and certainly they’re no different.

I have every confidence in that filter, despite the age.

Except that I parked the car in 2012, and a few kids and a lot of work, travel, etc. later, I’m driving it again. I had some concerns about going too far on the filter, which is why I wanted to tear it apart. But nothing really to be concerned about... would I routinely go that long? No.

That said, Honda allowed two 7500 mile OCIs on a filter, and my Saab allowed up to 36k km and two years... so the wildcard was years. And again, the potting and whatnot looked quite good.

But, but ~

It's so DIRTY ! =8-) .

OM617YOTA 07-10-2019 12:21 PM

I know you're joking, but I've actually heard that before.

Yes, it's a filter, it's SUPPOSED to be dirty. If it's been in service and it's CLEAN then it's not doing it's job.

Sorry 'Bout That Chief

I thought I had the sarcasm font on..... .
