Sagging W211 Headliner

While I love my five-year-old grandson dearly....

Had to have him in a car seat in the rear of the CDI for a few days as the van was unavailable. Today I noticed the headliner sagging in the rear...and the "smoking gun" of fingerprints right above the car seat!

Lots and lots of headliner threads...just want to see what anyone's thoughts are for a W211 in particular. Or perhaps a headliner is a headliner is a headliner.

Don't really want to spend a bunch of money....but it would be nice to get it dealt with.

Mercedes Medic has a good how-to thread....but my lack of patience and attention to detail could work against me!

Local auto upholstery shop charges $350 to replace....says that reattaching tends not to work too well.

I have the same problem in my 1997 E300D, and I've heard/read the same regarding reattaching the old material. A local shop was recommended to me so I plan to get a quote next month, as I have a lot going on the next few weeks.

Not really, over time the foam deteriorates and becomes detached from the fabric causing the sag. A drive with open windows would have caused this to occur. Once the separation starts, it continues rapidly.

Resticking isn't an option because of the deteriorated foam and stretched material.

If the car is still nice and you ever want to get $ when sold, pays 'da man otherwise it is safety pins and cork board pins. There really isn't a middle ground for this repair. Well, the 3rd option would be to pull the headliner board , remove the cloth and use spray paint. This works pretty well ( on cars I don't care much about ) giving a textured finish if the foam is left intact.

$ 350 is a good deal. I had my 97 C280 done about 3 years ago for about $ 250 . I pulled the headliner ( easy during a windshield change ) , scraped off the old foam ( less than easy as it is a sticky mess ) They did the headliner , 2 C pillar panels and the sun roof slider.

Be aware that you might have a ripple or two with a hand fitted recover, nothing beats something that came out of a factory mold.

A headliner is a headliner.

If you pull it and bring them the headliner have them re fit it and u go pick it up and install it yourself I doubt it would be anymore than $200

Actually good to know....sounds like it was inevitable anyway.

I'm about to try something similar. I saw a you tube video that recommended hot gluing a needle to the aerosol tip of a 3M can of spray adhesive. Then poking the needle through the sagging headliner and giving a half second squirt
. The needle keeps from making a big hole in the headliner. Then quickly tap the headliner to get some of the glue smeared on it. Then give the glue a minute to get tacky and finally push the headliner to the roof and smooth out any wrinkles. Will report back with any success or failures.

No doubt, not as good as a headliner replacement, but it is worth a $15 can of 3M just to see!
