85 Euro OM617 motor and 4 speed swap

Hallo Leute!

Ich habe ein Frage für sie! I know this topic has been covered a lot but I have a chance at a good 240D that is pretty beat up but has the goods i need and I know it works.

I've read that hte 85 motors have a different spline or something(rushing making this post before i have to head out the door).

That being said would anyone have information on if an 85 European non turbo motor has the same issue? my 78 is kinda an oddball in that regard. the original 78 auto transmission works great behind it. just curious if any of you can help?

Vielen Dank!

Max

Everything should be bolt-in except the shift rods (need to be shortened), the driveshaft (shortened as well), and the trans crossmember might not work. You will need a crossmember for a 240 with auto trans. Quite possibly the auto 240 driveshaft may be bolt-in without modification, but I have not tried it.

The problem in 85 SD motors is the pilot hole in the crank is smaller and doesn't fit the pilot bearing. Some have sanded it out and made it work. My friend Junkyardjim put his pilot bearing in the freezer and squeezed it into his 85 crank.

Unfortunately it was a bit too tight when it warmed up and chewed itself apart.

So if you sand it I suggest a reaming machine like I used to have for brake cylinders which has a rough piece of sandpaper captured in a shank that can be chucked into a power drill and spun.

keep sanding until you can tap in the bearing,... just.

I think some members have had the bearing machined to fit as well. Easier to replace the bearing if it doesn't fit than the flywheel....

It might not. You can measure it with an instrument.

shifter bushing

Hi all. This is the sort of thing I might know but don't. Does the shifter bushing at the base of the shift lever for a four speed 123 car interchange with a five speed 123 car?

The shifter in my Studebaker is very loose. I have a bushing for a four speed but am not sure if it fits the five speed. I'm running the five speed od trans. in that car.
