Antique License Plate

I just wanting to get some insight. What do you think about putting an antique plate on a Mercedes Benz Classic or not?

Antique plate as in " plate issued years ago and used again on a car that could have used it when the car was new " or " old car that qualifies as an antique the gets a new special plate issued by the state " ?

I owned a 1971 280SE 3.5 coupe that I put a mint set of 1970 California (with a current year sticker)plates on. I got some nice comments. I did all of this through the Auto Club with no hassle. They checked to ensure that the 1970 plates were California DMV clear.

I have the '83 plate for it, but they didn't stamp the year in the plate anymore in 1983. You just got that little sticker as you do now. That beings the case I have thought about just getting an antique tag for it. I wanted to use the tag and the original sticker on it.

I have a friend who owns a 1930 Model A Ford. He bought a set of 1930 DMV cleared California plates for his car. He also purchased a separate metal sticker holder that mounts above the rear plate to which he affixes the current year California sticker.

It varies widely from state to state. Should you? Yes! Here in Kansas (won't apply to absolutely anyone else on this forum) the car has to be 35 years old to qualify. You can use Year of Manufacture plates or the state has a generic Antique plate. They issue a new sticker with the year of manufacture in case you don't have the right year sticker on it. There is no yearly sticker for antique plates. I have eight cars and bikes tagged this way. Got the plates from ebay.

In VA it's 25 years or older, it's a GREAT way to have your car sit while it gets repaired/rebuilt.
It's also a great way to collect older cars.

In Virginia you can get antique plates (2 styles), or find a set of YOM (year of manufacture).
If you mount these plates on your car, here is what changes:

Use is restricted. Only allowed to drive to shows, club functions, or maintenance.
(I do a lot of maintenance driving!)

In theory, you cannot travel more than a certain distance from home. Around 200 miles ÷/-, I think.

Perm plate, no renewal fee.

No annual safety inspection.

No annual car tax assesed.

A while back, people were tagging old cars with antique plates and using them as daily cars. Cops got wise, and now they tend to crack down on suspicious use.

I've not had a problem, but for my cars with these plates, I keep them detailed and they do not look like heaps to start with.

Jim

Today was the expiration day for the vehicle tags. I decided to take the 1983 tag I purchased a year and a half ago. I was prepared to just get an antiques tag if need be. I showed them the tag, and questioned about registering the '83 tag I had with me exactly as it lay on the counter. I was shocked. I got it registered with the '83 registration on it. They told me wow this looks cool. I am really pleased, that I didn't have to scrap a tag, that I diligently had hunted for. I got it installed now, and I am really happy about it.

In New York State you can have Year of Manufacture plates on a 25 year old or older vehicle if you can find plates numerically issued from that year and it has the original expiration sticker or metal tag of a year later. You do not have to put on the current year expiration sticker.

DMV does not make it easy. You have to deal only with the headquarters in Albany, Special Plates Dept.
Your insurance card must have the word "Historical" printed on it.
Good luck trying to get through to someone...

I have a YOM plate on my '87 motorcycle with an expriation of 4/88 and am hunting for a set for my sweet '83 300CD.
