Considering selling 3 W123 project cars
Hope this is the right spot for this question. I posted elsewhere and didn’t get many replies.
My Dad has 3 W123 diesels that he is considering selling in order to move on to some other projects. We aren’t sure what they are worth, or how much of a demand there is for these cars now. We would really appreciate some advice on this. It would be great to see them go to another enthusiast. Brief descriptions: 1981 300D. Yellow. Around 260k miles. Was running and driving until earlier this summer when the camshaft broke. No idea how much damage was done to the engine. Floors are rusty and have been patched before. Body has some other rust too. Interior not great, but I’ve seen worse. 1981 300D. Silver. Parts car. Good engine that could be used for the yellow ‘81. Very rusty. Floor repairs were started before it was decided car was too far gone to save. Interior is apart but we have most pieces. 1983 240D. Blue. 318k miles. Engine seems to be seized. We had it running and lot drivable (barely) about 10 years ago. Passenger floor needs to be patched, drivers floor seems ok. Body has plenty of dents and scrapes but not as rusty as the other 2. We have another engine for this one, it ran fine on a stand about 10 years ago. Interior somewhat apart but we have most pieces. None of these are running. All would need to be trailered. We’d really prefer to sell all 3 together. Picture is from 2018. More pictures are available Thank you very much! -Marco |

Honestly, around me, rusty non-turbo cars, $500 tops for each. You’d honestly make way more parting then out, especially if your willing to ship or do eBay.

3 cars non-running, high miles, no turbo, major rust, basket case interiors, seller who wants to move all 3 together......you're probably talking $750-1K for the entire lot if you find a motivated enough buyer. That is the key - you're gonna have to hold out for a seriously motivated enthusiast to move them. The rust makes them nearly worthless - there are plenty of rust-free or low-rust examples out there for a pittance. The knockout blow is the lack of any runners. Part out what you can, sell the running engine, scrap the rest.

Thanks for the advice everyone. We still have some thinking to do. My Dad and I both love W123s but there’s other projects to get to. Maybe we’ll sell both 300Ds and keep the 240D?? Again, thanks. I’ll post again if/when we make a decision

If any have a good body and interior, I'd fix that by fitting a 617 turbo and sell the others. I want 1 good runner and will get rid of anything surplus sometime in the next year.
