The top center part is an external snap ring that is missing one leg. ( for vac pump pivot retention ? )

The far right 2nd from bottom ( larger rectangle piece ) looks to be part of a timing chain guide / tensioner.

I guess I need to pull them both and take a look before something really breaks.

I've found one of those clips in my oil, too!

Did this come out during a change or did you drop the pan?

Mine was found when I dropped the pan; it was in the oil pickup screen.

I dropped the pan to replace the turbo drain tubes gasket and the check valve for the oil return from air cleaner. They are now done... at least I have the turbo, intake and manifold still off the car, so it pretty easy to check the these other parts.

I recall a similar-looking clip ring somewhere, but perhaps that style is used throughout. When I removed the oil pan in my 1984 300D, I found parts of the oil pump tensioner and a bolt that had dropped from the oil pump. One side of the plastic tensioner pivot had cracked off, so it was cocked and dragging on the chain. I think only the turbo version have that chain-driven oil pump. People said you must remove the upper oil pan (tough) to get the sprocket off the oil pump to remove it, but I managed using a box wrench and working carefully. A new guide is available and cheap. It is good to remove the oil pump since it has an outlet tube up to the block w/ circumferential O-rings which likely become hard (mine broke off, I recall, w/o could lose oil pressure). Can't remember if I found Viton O-rings of that size (my preference for critical locations). If part of the vacuum pump, you are lucky, since others had their innards slide into the timing chain to wreck the engine. Not the smartest design.

Good call. See attached pic.

Hmmm... I should check my vacuum pump! Maybe replace the bearings with sealed ones, too.

That may or may not be the issue. When the play of the intermediate shaft on the Timer gets worn out it allows the timer to move to the rear (The vacuum pumps spring pushes it that direction).
If there is enough wear on the bushing the Vacuum Pump Piston apparently bottoms out and the shock and spring tension pull on the piston central shaft and the piston cracks.
If the shaft pulls out all hell breaks loose.

I found coins in my pan once, and when I asked the dealer about that he said "well you told me to change the oil!"

It is the in and out play of the Timer that can cause the Vacuum Pump Failure.

My question What in particular causes vacuum pump failure?
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/204187-what-particular-causes-vacuum-pump-failure.html

Notice that right below the Timer (where the Vacuum Pump would be located) is 2 guide rails. Those are 2 likely spots that parts would also fall into and I believe they have that plastic type material on the sides that face the chain. See 93a and 93 circled in green on the attached pic.
