W124 2.5 Turbo Rear Muffler Options

So, while working on the rear shocks/swaybar bushings this weekend, I discovered a 4-5 inch rotted out spot at the weld on my rear muffler. Inspection is coming up at the end of next month so that's going to have to be fixed. I've found the Ansa replcement online for around $180, but wanted to know what other options may be out there.

Any good custom exhaust shop should have one that will work fine for cheaper. That being said, when I replaced the muffler on the 92 I had I bought OEM for about the price you're seeing and the shop was glad to install it.

Make sure that what you found is for the turbo, as the NA part is NOT interchangeable (55mm vs 48mm). The exhaust components for the 190D turbo have been out of production for years. The only remaining aftermarket manufacturer I know of is Polmostrow, which is not available in the US. So if you've found something, buy it and a spare if you plan to keep the car. I ran an Ansa muffler for five years, no complaint. Your only other option is a custom fab.

You can also straight pipe that part of the system. It is a turbo right? Actually if turboed no muff at all is not very loud.

It's the turbo model. But I want "quiet as possible and no drone"... In my youth I liked a little rumble, but my ears can't take it now.

How much louder would a straight pipe in that section be?

Any reason why you won’t consider a dealer replacement?

The rumble is slight and seldom heard. I run my 617 turbo in my 39 Studebaker with no muff. It never is loud. Occasionally you can hear the turbo whine slightly.

I ended up going to a local muffler shop and they put on a MagnaFlow, free flow muffler. Did a fine job fabbing up the tailpipe. I have one 2 inch pipe instead of the two smaller, but it looks bone stock (and it's quieter too). $162 out the door and it took less than an hour.

Well for one thing, the entire 190DT exhaust system has been NLA for at least the last five years. Not available from Mercedes, the classic center, or any third party in the US.

Since the OP solved his issue I guess this is for others that need the info.

This is a pic I copied from someone else and is supposed to be an 1980's 300D Trubo Diesel Muffler.

All there is to it is an expansion chamber; no packing in it.
