My 1997 E300 Key fell apart.
Was walking to my car and noticed all that was left was the front side with the botton. No blade, no guts.
Retraced my steps and found the blade and nothing else. I was in shock, Mercedes can't make them anymore. Maybe a local locksmith can save it. But that's some extremely wishful thinking.

There are aftermarket replacement key shells available on e bay. No experience with them myself so can't vouch for the quality, but it has to be better than broken/missing parts. You have to supply your own blade and circuit board, but it sounds like you have both of those.
You could also find someone selling a used genuine key, I see a few on e bay, and then swap your blade and board into it.

is the key for a 97 different from an 01? I just got a modern fob (triangle panic button and chrome) not that long ago for my 2001 W210 and they had it in two days....

Unfortunately I think the 96-97 w210 is in the "lose the keys and its a parts car" category. If its one they can't make a valet key for (w126 style key) or the newer infrared keys then I don't think there is any solution.

I just spoke to the dealership, he said they can get a new key for the 1997 E300, for a Grand Total of $298.
I gave them my vin so it shouldn't be any misunderstanding on the model and year.

Yes it is different, it has a switch key blade and fob combo unit if that makes sense.

OK, despite other threads turning into a panic by those that ignore my words I'll pose this question again.
Has anyone tied to get a " CLIPPED HEAD POCKET KEY " from the dealer recently for a 97 C / E / S / SL ? These were $ 45 a few years ago and while you won't have remote unlock, you will be able to manually open and start the car without any programming. I have extensive experience with the DAS systems on the 97 gas cars and am making the assumption that the 97 diesel cars are the same. The 98 + C and E and probably the SL went to a " Smart Key " , the 97 to 99 ish S kept DAS. The ML uses a version of the 97 DAS but I don't follow those cars much. The 97 DAS uses an RFID chip in the fob or key as an anti theft device. The antenna around the ignition lock inductively couples to the PCF7935 RFID chip causing it to send data to the DAS box behind the instrument cluster. If this data is what the DAS box expects, it releases the ECU to continue to run and sends a new code to the RFID chip that is used in the next start attempt. This is how rolling code works. This rewriting of the code is why cranking on a weak / dead battery will scramble the sequence bricking the car. Some will blame the jump start for the failure but the root cause was the weak battery. Do a web search for dimensions of the PCF7935 RFID chip , this is the critical part you need. The circuit board is just for remote lock. Have you tried to hold the fob up to the ignition lock while you use the metal key? It is possible to program new keys on an all keys lost DAS by using the device below and some blank PCF7935 RFID chips. Reprogramming the DAS or ECU so different units can be attached to each other seems to require wiping the VIN / reprogramming the VIN in both units but I have not tried this yet. From what I gather, the diesel uses a Bosch ECU also found on VW cars. Given this is more a more popular application, I'm betting you can get the ECU reflashed to eliminate the anti theft. |

Did you make sure the PCF7935 chip was still in your possession / look for it on the ground? The trail will go colder and colder at time goes on.

Did you read my posts 8 and 9 then made sure the chip was still in existence not on the ground somewhere? This costs nothing and by now the trail is very cold.

Did you try to hold what was left of the fob up to the ignition lock then turn the metal key / start car to see if the RFID chip was still there?
