1982 240d blow by tube that going to the oil pan gap

I notice that there seems to be a big gap between the top of the oil pan and the tube that catches the blow by and returns the oil to the pan.

Does this gap seem normal? My car seems to be leaking oil on the top of the oil pan instead of returning the oil to the oil pan.

Picture attached.

Thanks,

pete

That is one of the stupidist details ever found on a mb. There is supposed to be a fat o ring in that funnel shaped bell to keep the oil inside it. Yours must be gone. The way to fix it by the book is to remove the pan IIRC. There was a post here recenty suggesting a relatively simple way to do it with hose, hose reducer and hose clamps. A search might find it. I'll guess it was posted here on the diesel section about a month ago.

I don't own a 240d so I don't know if the gap is normal but there is supposed to be an O-ring on the nipple.

And on the 300D's there is a central tab or clamp on the skinny tube abut in the middle that is supposed to stabilize the tube. That camp is often broken or the tube has a hole in it.

Thanks for the quick replies. I will pull the tube off and replace the o-ring.

I'm thinking about cutting part of the tube and adding a piece of silicone tubing and attach it to the tube and pan with worm clamps.

On mine there is also an O-ring on the Air Filter Housing nipple; if I am remembering it correctly.
