E320 CDI Timing Chain End Result
The engine did not jump time though the timing chain tensioner ratcheted out fully. The cause was the high pressure fuel pump's idler gear's mounting bolt had walked out causing the gear to wobble. Unfortunately. a collar that keeps the gear aligned and supports it from the engine side also wobbled and egged out the recess in the head that the collar fits into.
So, a new head is required to make the repair as well. This factored in with replacing the timing gears and the high pressure pump is too expensive. So, I purchased a used engine with 160K on it for just $900 and free shipping. It came with the turbo, and fuel injectors, even the wiring harness. My question is..... I am going to save the fuel injectors (probably sell them on Ebay) the turbo and fuel rail from my damaged engine, can you guys think of any other parts that I should salvage from the block? The replacement engine is minus the accessories, ie: the power steering pump, ac compressor, starter, alternator, etc... Thanks in advance
