All warning lights activated while driving on highway then shut off

Hi all,

1994 300d. The car was running fine and I was cruising down the highway around 70mph then all lights on the dash were activated, a puff of white smoke, and then cut off. I pulled over to the side of the road and when I went to try to turn the key again...the starter wouldn’t even kick on. Waited about 30 minutes for tow truck and thought I would try again. I got movement on the starter this time but no successful ignition.

Any thoughts on good places to check first?

Thanks

Time for a new voltage regulator or alternator from the sound of it.

Agreed, probably a VR failure. 10 minute job to replace. Only go with genuine Bosch, not that expensive to do so.

But seriously, where did the white smoke come from?

90s 60x engines had the boost controlled by vacuum via a transducer operated by the ECU. If the ECU puked due to low voltage, it would follow that the boost died along with it.

Oh so you're saying it ran rich for a brief moment as charge pressure was lost?
Plausible...

OP:

was the smoke from the exhaust?

Yes it was a brief puff of white smoke out tailpipe at the same time the all the lights came on.

Sounds like I will at least be pulling the alternator/voltage regulator to at least check. Any good leads on where to purchase?

Thanks for the help so far everyone.

I ordered a voltage regulator which is on the way. Pulled the car in the garage and getting my space cleaned up and ready to go and start working on it next weekend. Noticed a pool of fluid around the injector (4th one back). The rest are dry. Might be narrowing things down a bit more...or at least found a 2nd issue. Lol
