Question Urgent: 83 300D OM617 would not shut off

Daughter called and said the car would not shut off with key. Press the red emergency lever and it still wouldn't shut off. Car just shakes when lever is pressed. No diesel runaway, though.

I told her to loosen each injector to kill the fuel but she managed to turn it off by revving the engine and pressed the emergency lever at the same time. What is wrong? Any idea is appreciated.

Likely a vacuum leak. Maybe revving the engine increased the vacuum enough to activate the shut off actuator. So, could be a vacuum leak that the vacuum pump can over come when at high RPM???

Vacuum leak to shut off valve?
Probably the increased rpms gave a liitle more vacuum to allow for shutdown.

Vacuum leaks often happen after an oil change, when oil filter canister lid is removed, and vacuum connecters get loose.

If vacuum leak, can't explain why pressing emergency lever wouldn't kill the engine. IP has issues?

Sometimes the emergency shut off lever doesn't work due to a linkage being out of adjustment. I'll bet that is a separate issue from the apparent vacuum leak.

Yes to the above.
Each one of the linkage rods has a specified length

Since I am here I am just going to add this stuff.
Also in the attached picture the plunger the yellow arrow is pointing to is supposed to telescope up inside of the Idle Adjustment screw. Some have has that plunger get rusted and not be able to more or move only part way.

The original posters idle could be hanging on the Rack Damper/Governor Idle Pin.
Back that off at lest till it has effect on the idle speed and adjust the Idle with the Idle Adjustment Screw and then slowly turn the Rack Damper/Governor Idle Pin in until it takes up the shaking but it is actually not supposed to effect the idle speed.

And see if you can now shut off using the manual shut off.

She is a clever girl. Doing her PhD at UC Davis. The car is 500 miles away and I am glad she managed to shut it down. She is quite handy and it is one of the reasons that she drives the 36 years car. She has a newer truck though but she had surgery last month and she couldn't drive the truck yet as it is 5-sp. Thank for your help.

Make sure she had the key off and removed when trying to stop lever~ I once tried and couldn't overcome the vacuum until I shut the key off .

Diesels: Shut off the fuel supply or the air supply.

A vice grips or strong hands and a pliers squeezing the Fuel Inlet Hose to shut of the fuel flow will work.

My Trade School Instructor said he saw a case were a Diesel ran a way and a guy cut the fuel line.

Not a good idea because some fire extinguishers have powder in them.

When I went in the Army I left my first Car a 1954 Cadillac with my Mother. At the time it did not have the large and elaborate oil bat air filter on it. My Mother would drive it occasionally and it backfired and caught fire.

A good Samaritan put the fire out by hosing down the Carburetor with his fire extinguisher that had powder in it. Then My Mother tried to start the Engine sucking said powder into the Engine and it never started again.

At the time I was not so mechanically inclined and I did not what to spend my leave time taking apart the Engine to clean it out and I junked the Cadillac.
