1983 300td cooling system
Hello group,
I finally attempted to start my 83 wagon after an engine swap, and a trans rebuild. I attempted to pour coolant in it. It would not take much. I ended up taking the upper radiator hose off the radiator and pouring coolant in the block. I installed: new radiator, new water pump, new thermostat, all new coolant-heater hoses. When I squeeze upper and lower radiator hoses, I can see fluctuation in the expansion tank. When I remove the hose from the radiator to the expansion tank (upper) I have very slight drips out it, I get a little more flow with rpms. I’m not running hot, Is this normal? I know on newer cars you can see flow from the water pump in the res from this hose. Any suggestions or ideas? Thought about a spill free funnel. I now have close to (3) gallons of coolant in the vehicle. |

That all sounds normal to me. Filling from the upper radiator hose is the only way to get coolant into these engines. I learned that the hard way. If you have close to 3 gallons in the system, that is about all it will take. It should be fine.
