1982 240d master clutch cylinder push rod broke

I installed a new master clutch cylinder 1 year ago when it started to leak. The brand I bought was FTE. I've been having problems with the clutch for a while and tonight the push rod broke.

They sell just the push rod which makes me think that they sometimes break. Has anyone experienced the rod breaking?

I'm wondering if I should get a push rod or maybe order a different clutch master cylinder.

Does anyone recommend a brand or a brand to avoid?

Thanks,

Pete

you talking about that 2" or so rod with blunt curved ends? I cannot imagine one ever breaking but if they did you could make one from an old bolt.

I removed the broken parts today. It looks like there's an eccentric bolt that hold the bushing to the clutch pedal. The bushing has 2 sides so maybe it was installed wrong.

Does anyone know if I have the bolt inserted correctly or should it be flipped?

Thanks,

pete

You got it right.
Broken a couple of these... always at the worst times too.

The first one broke about 6 months after I bought the car.
I installed the new part same as the broken part. Then that broke about a year later. Finally realized the original had been installed incorrectly -a tradition I had inadvertently continued.

Two things: Make sure the plastic push rod head is facing in the right direction. You can install it both ways, but the wrong way will put it at a slight angle and the force of your pedal pushes will be somewhere near the neck of the rod instead of driving straight into the cylinder. Second, spin the eccentric somewhere between maximum and minimum height before tightening up the nut.

From memory, the circular lip of the head (left side of the head in image 1) should be facing the pedal arm.

I keep an extra one of these things in my glove box now.

Shern,

Are you saying I should put the bolt through the head exactly how it's shown in picture 1 and 2?

Thanks,

Pete

Yes.

Also, if you image search 'w123 clutch pedal,' you'll find a few reassuring photos of the correct orientation.
