603 rebuilt injectors now noisy as h*#l

I just had the injectors rebuilt on the 603 by a shop here in Vegas that specializes in diesels, injectors, etc. Tech said they were all popping at various pressures and two were pissing fuel. Ok, needed it done. However, they are installed and the engine is about as noisy as any diesel I can remember. It has damned good power and on the road is just fine, but the idle noise is unbearable. I suspect the injectors are popping at the wrong pressure. Thoughts?

They should quiet down after you've driven for a while.

Check the pump timing. I bet someone along the way advanced timing to try to squeeze more power with the old injectors.

Newly rebuilt injectors can take a couple hundred miles to quieten down. If the pop pressure was really low, you may now have symptoms of worn/leaky delivery valves. The nailing can be quite loud at idle or low RPM, but go away entirely at >1200RPM.

Supposedly the previous owner put a rebuilt IP on her not long before I took possession. So there is no leaking at the delivery valves and they, in theory and if the PO was truthful, should not be worn. I've been running it over the last day or so and it seems to be quieter. I added a liter of veggie oil this morning to the regular fuel too and she is a bit more quiet.

Give it 500+ miles and a highway trip before getting too excited about new injectors. Every set I've done has been remarkably noisy for the first ~200 miles or so then markedly quieted down. The older 603's with vertical injection have a given amount of diesel "chatter" that's more or less normal. The newer ones (all 3.4L or 3.0L with upgraded head/prechambers) with oblique injection are extremely quiet, just a very muted "thud" for each injection event.

I agree with what the others have said. But, I have always wondered if the Injectors produce less noise after they have been run in or you just get used to the noise.

Fuel Injection Pump timing being off can be a cause of the noise.

You did not say who made the new Nozzles used in the rebuild. Many have reported that Bosio Nozzles are noisier then the Monark or the stock Bosch Nozzles.

Not sure who made the nozzles. I didn't think to ask. It has become quieter after about 100 miles. It is certain that these engines have chatter even when operating correctly. I have observed better performance in acceleration since installing the injectors. And it fires up when hot with barely a full revolution - it seems tuned very well.
