E320 CDI oil change intervals?

Hey guys,

I used to change my engine oil about every 7,500 miles.

I had a catastrophic engine failure resulting in replacing the engine with a used lower mileage engine.

I had recently started using the Lubro-molly engine oil specified for diesels.

Its a bit expensive so I'd like to try another oil.

Does the 2005 CDI require synthetic or synthetic blend oil, and what manufacturers do you guys recommend?

Also, at what intervals do you recommend changing the oil?

Thanks

This is a very debatable topic so there's a lot of opinions that some may or may not agree. When in doubt go with MB recommendations of 229.51 or 229.31 (old specs) IE Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30.

MB recommends at 10k miles intervals, I have too many cars so to keep up on what oil change intervals are, I like to stick with 1k mi per quart of oil and round it down, the Om648 takes ~8.8 quarts is what about 8k miles is good time to change it.

I've start using rotella T6 they've reformulated in 2012 for DPF and have been using for a lot of my common rail diesel ie Ram ecodiesel, and even in older diesels (soon 1994 S350d) It's a very stout oil with 5w-40 with, which what these engines ran originally with the Mobil 1 ESP 5w-40* (discontinued).

However the differences are that shell has higher sulfurated ash in their oils @ =0.9% (Shell 2013) while mobil 1 formula M ESP which had very low sulfurated ash <0.6% (Mobil 1 PDF 2016). Lower the sulfurated ash the better for the DPF performance and lifespan, however at a cost of reduce anti-oxidant and anti-wear additives in the oils. (Watson, Wong, Brownawell; et al)

MB recommendation oil 229.31 or 229.51 or EURO oil spec ACEA C3-10 which is low ash oils, with sulfurated ash <0.8%

Shell is ACEA E9-16 which is not MB recommendation but comparatively is significantly better in all aspects of in protection and is a heavy duty grade oil, the sulfurated ash is =0.9% which slightly higher then MB recommendation thus falls off their recommendation.

So if your not comfortable with running slightly higher sulfurated ash levels oils (ie higher antiwear/antioxidation) then run MB spec 229.31 or 229.51 or euro spec ACEA C3-10, ie Motul x-clean 5w-40 or 5w-30, Mobil 1 ESP (5w-30 ONLY!), or Following oils can be found at walmart shelf Pennzoil Euro L 5W-30, Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-40.

Here's a very useful tool on what manufacturer oil spec requires
https://online.lubrizol.com/relperftool/pc.html#

I've made one with MB 229.51 vs MB229.31 vs euro spec ACEA C3-16 oil (our approved MB oil)

MB's interval is 13k but I never make it that far....usually change at 10k.

I got a large supply of M1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 for $12.99 a gallon that I've been working my way through. When it's used up I'll either use M1 0w40 or Rotella T6 (above post is interesting).

howdee, ENG!
where does Delvac say it has MB 229.51 approval?
would use Mobil 1 ESP M rated 15W40 instead. called a Euro oil.
I'm not recommending that based on experience since I use Motul 5W30 with the low ash formula.

vehicle manufacturer recommends a 0W-30 or 0W-40 viscosity and oil that meets MB-Approval 228.51, MB-Approval 229.31, MB-Approval 229.51 or MB-Approval 229.52
This is what I get when I punch in 05 E320 CDI in the Mobil website on which oils to use. Does the 05 CDI call for the 229.51 spec? I don't remember.

Here is link:

Mobil Oil

I run Delo 400 Synthetic in my 98 E300 and change it every 10k miles.

A search shows the specs for one of the Delvac XP oils meet MB 228.51 a notch below 229.51 I suppose.
looks more to be used in trucks of course a 617 would qualify.
there are also 4 different Delvac XP oils available, very confusing.

Main thing is for 07 and later diesels need the ESP based on everything I've read.

Any vehicle with dpf requires low ash oils to prevent dpf from clogging up, however if your engine has no dpf ie delete then diesel oil 5w-30 or 5w-40 is recommended however with newer spec 0w-30 or 0w-40 meets requirements also but not what these engines were using originally.

Also using an old stash of TDT, I usually go 13k, but after this analysis and the thickening I think I will stick to 10k.

Will probably switch to Mobil 1 0w40 next as that is also stockpiled!

Knowing that oil is "Cheap Insurance", and that I mostly drive in town with very little highway driving, I change (and have changed) the oil in all my Diesels at 5,000 mile intervals. The older iron head engines get regular 15-40 conventional, the CDI's get M1 Synthetic, the Bluetec gets M1 ESP. The W211 with the M112 gets M1 Euro at 10K (gas engines are not as hard on the oil as Diesels are). I also use a polyester filter if available for each application. This is what I do, YMMV.

I use https://www.walmart.com/ip/Castrol-EDGE-0W-40-A3-B4-Full-Synthetic-Motor-Oil-5-QT/35931146 and http://https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-Advanced-Full-Synthetic-Motor-Oil-0W-40-5-qt/23636902 both widely available at Walmart. I prefer the Castrol but have no scientific data to back up.

I also use a bit of Molybdenum disulfide and AVBLEND.
