Thumbs up Holidayze

I try to make my Foster boys understand that Christmas isn't supposed to be all about greed and gifts, the TV makes that a very difficult chore .

As it turns, they had a nice Christmas with my Sweet, her daughter, grand daughter and great grand son .

One of the boys asked me to help him assemble a LEGO Ferrari , that was intricate .

The other boy got a McLaren (his dream car) LEGO kit and managed to assemble it him self, came to show me proudly .

The rain forecasted finally arrived and isn't heavy like expected .

We woke up to snow here in the High Desert of So. Cal. this morning. I feel sorry for those travelers going by way of I-15 over the Cajon pass. It got a foot or more of snow last night. Since Christmas is 12 days, I guess you could say we got our dream of a white Christmas!

Last I heard, the Cajon Pass was closed. It may be open intermittently, with escorts. If it is snowing here (3,200 ft) it is surely snowing in the pass (3,500 ft). Most people here in So. Cal don't know how to drive in snow, so accidents happen often in the Cajon Pass when it snows....Rich

Post Snow Driving

I grew up in snow country and I don't know how to drive in it ! .

Like carbys or automatic trannies, you need to keep at it or you loose the ability .

Some people appear to never learn to drive in snow. We do have snow in eastern Canada. Basically only once really so far this year except at the higher elevations.

Rule number one to me at least seems to be slow down. Given a choice we as a couple try to stay off the roads if any amount has fallen. At least until the snowplows have done their jobs.

We also do have to make judgements on weather to be expected on certain trips or not.

We are well compensated for them. So at times I run the marginal situations myself. I have had to turn back a few times. At least true white outs are not that common here. It is hard but you must let common sense overcome money. I also have to consider the safety of the passenger.

The advantage of using diesels is if you are stuck somewhere it will take days to burn a tank of fuel at idle. The downside is modern diesel cars produce little heat at idle. Something carried in the trunk to cover the radiator may not help. I suspect the thermostat would not even remain open at idle.

Where cars like the 240ds will keep you pretty warm at idle. So I make it a habit to keep the fuel level high on the cars we use for these trips. It is common for people to be stuck for two days on an area we call the pass.

In fact just before the wife retired for the night. We had a look at trips that are booked for January. Every trip is through the pass area. Fortunatly there are few of them booked so far. This is the wrong time of the year.
