Odd Tire Squealing Issue

2 Weeks ago I had mounted a new Tire on a rim (84 300D) and put it the Trunk as a spare. It is the stock size of Tire.

Yesterday My Wife called me from a food market parking lot saying she had flat tire.

I changed the flat tire but as she was pulling out and turned the wheels the Tire started squealing! It was not the power steering type squealing but like the side wall was rubbing on something.

Very distressing with a new Tire.

I had her pull back into the parking spot blocked, jacked up the Car and removed the tire and due to darkness got out a Flashlight and inspected the tire and the and found no areas of rubbing or contact.
I put the Tire back on and I drove the Car around the parking lot and is still squealed. Then I was thinking power steering but the tire squealed a little during breaking with the wheels straight a head.

I pulled out of the parking lot and took it for a test drive on the streets and the squealing disappeared. (This is going to show the importance of test driving after you have worked on your Car.)

I was baffled; especially when I pulled into the Market parking lot ant the Tire started squealing again.

At that point I decided it was the Parking Lot itself that was the issue. While I was changing the Tire and looking around at the Parking lot it looked like the Parking lot was new. Perhaps re-coated and all of the white lines were new or repainted.

Apparently the squealing was being caused by the combination of brand new Tire and the parking lot coating.

I had my Wife drive the Van home and I drove the Mercedes and it did not squeal any more.

Post Tire Squeal

? Was the parking lot surface shiny ? . if so that's it .

Or, maybe you shouldn't drive over 65 MPH in a parking lot.....

Please tell us you didn't unleash ALL of the power of an OM617 300D in a parking lot!!!

Yes, it was likely the new surface allowing the tire to slip making a squealing noise. Shops with sealed concrete floors or painted floors make a loud squealing noise on any turn even at crawl-like speeds.

Carry on and good luck!!!
