Glow Plug PN Experience OM617

Since replacing glow plugs is so bothersome, I began keeping an Excel sheet of the various glow plugs I have used and their life in my 1984 & 85 300D cars. Results to date:

Bosch - all glow plugs "as found" in my cars (don't know the life).
CFP (China?) - failed 23K, 26K, & 21K miles. 1 still working at 33K miles.
VSP PU-139 (China?) - failed 12K miles. 3 still working at 12K, 6K, & 7K miles.

I installed two Autolite 1103 (<10K so far) and have 3 more on the shelf.
I just ordered qty 10 Bosch 80006 (France) since they have the best reviews. I have no data to support that, but guess the as-found Bosch glow plugs in my 2 cars had lasted >20K miles.

Worst-case would be not just a simple burnout but if the tip breaks or melts to put steel inside your engine. Hopefully, that would be captured in the prechamber so could be removed by just unscrewing the injector.

Hope you have better luck with the Autolites then I did. After 6 months I barely got 2 of them out because the tips swelled.

Then I used Monarks because like you they were on my shelf and one of them died in a years use. Not this here in S CA where winter is not cold.

Since that time it has only been Bosch Glow Plugs for me (made in France). Reliable and don't cost much if you search for a good price.

On my Volvo Diesel I used Champion Glow Plugs with no what I considered early failure issues. Never tried them on the Mercedes.

People say Beru Glow Plugs are longer lasting but they cost more and are not as easy to find from multiple sellers.

The lives of all of the Glow Plugs can be reduced by not reaming out the carbon, and things not happening during combustion when and where they are supposed to include valve vdjustments and Valve timing. Opinion.

Autolites have been, in my experience, expensive and unreliable. Fortunately, They burned out so soon, they didn't swell.

I would rather buy Pedulag glow plugs. Beru and Bosch seem to be the best. Beru are hard to find outside Germany and France, not even common in UK.
