Push button kick down switch?
I'm thinking of tapping in to the switch on the floor and running a button to the center console for being able to have the tranny kickdown without needing to bury the accelerator pedal.
Thoughts?

There are situations in 4th gear cruising slowly where a pull of the bowden cable(ie. stepping on the gas but not all the way) would cause a 4 to 3 downshift and a kickdown press would cause a further 3 to 2 for maximum passing power. Hitting the switch only would likely jump right down to 2nd gear and then double upshift back up to 4th once released... doesn't sound ideal. Sounds like a bowden cable misadjustment or the throttle valve spring the bowden cable is attached to inside the transmission is broken; this is an issue I have at the moment as well.
Does you car upshift 2 to 3 then immediately 3 to 4 unless REAAAAALLY heavy on the throttle and then the shift spacing is somewhat more normal?

Your car already has a switch for this. It's the shifter knob

There's a paragraph in "The Book" about my other car about doing exactly that. However, the stock transmission calibration in that car is abysmal. Mercedes automatics, if they're adjusted and working properly, will generally get in the right gear at the right time, at least most of the time. About the only way you're getting a better transmission calibration is to replace the auto box with a manual, which incidentally I did about ten years ago.

Installed a push button inside shifter housing, push over to right in drive down shifts one
gear, smooth and nice, really like. Will up shift when released. Will install left foot button for mountain use. Trans. is adjusted and shifts at proper times. I understand what the man is after and I would tell you go for it! |

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments.

This is either a band-aid or redundant.
Band-aid: When the bowden cable and the vacuum are set up correctly, and the engine is producing factory power, the transmission should shift just fine. If any of these three things are off, shifting will suffer. Redundant: As pointed out by a couple of posts above, you can force a down-shift with the transmission shift lever. What is gained by modifying the wiring and adding a switch?

If you have a shift lever that allows you to slide over into 1st gear, that is a duplicate kick down switch.
If you are in top gear and use your finger to slide that plate over when the sifter is not down there it kicks it down like the floor pedal switch. Slide if back to the left and the fun is over. This functions in the electronically controlled trans to keep you in the lowest possible gear for the speed at all times. sport mode. |
