99 E300

I went to se a 99 E300 yesterday it looks good the seller has the service record since it was new but there’s no record of the transmission ever been serviced the seller told me that the shop doing the maintenance told him that it’s a seal transmission I don’t believe it is a sealed transmission the car has 250,500 miles on it I know the engine it’s good for another 100 K miles but I’m worry about the transmission he wants $2900,00 for the car I offered $2500,00. What do you guys think ?

diesels before 95 or 96 are smog exempt in CA so with a 99 it has to go through smog

Smog check it’s not a problem it’s a visual inspection as longest the check engine light is not on it’ll pass

Ideally that transmission should be serviced every 40k miles. MB retracted the "sealed for life" nonsense years ago. That's a lot of miles without an ATF change....so it's a calculated risk you'd be taking.

Mine is a 98. I change tranny fluid every 30 or 40k. Changing on a 250k transmission IF IT HAS NEVER BEEN CHANGED would be rolling the dice in my opinion. If I were buying it I would probably do tranny fluid and filter change along with conductor plate replacement.

The 722.6 transmission in these cars is actually one of the best MB transmissions in my opinion. Very DIY friendly compared to the newer 722.9. If the rest of the car was nice, then it may still be worth that price. Nice examples of the '98 & '99 are getting hard to find.

It has a dipstick tube, but no stick. The tool is available most everywhere (Pelican, ebay, Amazon etc.). If it still has the red tab on the black cap, break it off and push the red part (looks like a key) through to be able to remove the cap. You can either buy a new red key, or just push the old one in the slot. It is only there to keep the cap from coming off easily.

I am not far from you, and can help if you need it. I had an E300 years ago, and it is still on the road. They are one of the best MB's ever made in my opinion.......Rich

I'd buy it and probably be over there with asking price, cash in hand.

The car has it's finer points, and it's definitely got it's equal number of weak points.

I wouldn't be interested in a used car with 250,000 miles on it. There's got to be low mileage E300s for the same $ out there.

Mine had 100K on it before I R&Red the transmission fluid, filter, and gasket. There was nothing wrong with it.
