I'd have answered sooner but I had to finish laugfing

I had a reciever type put on my 190e 2.6 and my Peugeot turbo diesel. It cost about $175 and I use it for my utility trailer. Nothing unusual or unexpected, including a little diffuculity finding someone to do it.

I have a trailer hitch and ball that came off of my 83 300D. It mounts with large bolts in holes drilled into the bottom of the bumper. I've never towed anything with either my 240D or 300D but the previous owner of the 300D towed a boat of some type.

The hitch is heavy duty and may be a factory item...I need to look. I don't know what type of load you could carry with this type of the mount.

This mount could be put on a car in the time to drill two holes through the bottom of the bumper and tighten up two large bolts.

I put one on my 82 240D. Got it from Advance Auto for about $25...drilled 4 - 1/2" holes and bolted to the bottom of the bumper. P.O. had already added a wiring harness and had installed and removed another hitch. I pull a 5x12 utility trailer with it. You don't go too fast, but it keeps my trunk clean from not having to stowe fertilizer, pine mulch, lawn mowers or whatever other stuff I need to transport. I wouldn't trust it to more than 1000 #'s, but for light duty it serves me well (i.e. bumper hasn't fallen off yet).

Good luck.

Are you saying it would be a good idea to cut the bottom out of the drivers door so I can push with my foot when needed ?

Greg

Checkout www.hitch-web.com

You can download PDF's of the installation instructions for each different hitch. Some of them look pretty cheezy, and others look prety solid.

Talking

Greg
I would like to have a hitch as well, to haul an engine or something that wont quite fit in the trunk. Driving my old F 250 is much to spendy and not near as comfey. I was thinking a 500 lb engine in a little trailer wouldn't slow down a 240D too badly??? If I come to Texas in the fall I could haul home brew.

Are you talking hauling homebrew from there to here .... like for the shindig ? or haul it back from here ? I think a major consideration is keeping the trailer not higher than the trunk height... that should really help on air flow...actually,,,, if you tucked your trailer up close enough it might just make the car faster,, but damn it would make backing the trailer a nightmare.... That site Paul pointed out showed me what I needed to know to make my own...

Thumbs up

Leathermang

Ya, allot of the time my contribution to 'shindigs' around here is my home brew but Texas would be a little far to haul beer, but I do like the idea of not going dry in case of a break down.

That hitch going for $120 something on that sight looked good, is that the one you were talking about. I have a cutting out fit but I am not much of a welder. It looked like it could be bolted together if the parts were bent right. Keep us posted if you make one. i have lots of scrap steel around that could become a hitch . Just thought of something. Saw one of those little old "tear drop" camping trailers the other day. Wouldnt that be nice with "painted to match" MB hub caps behind a 240D?

Stevo, that is pretty funny,,, if you go to yahoo groups and look up teardroptrailer you will find a club I started last year.... LOL.... these should be ideal for 240d owners... we have some great pics and great sites in the links... We have 47 members ! But could have a whole lot more after this post ...LOL.....

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/teardroptrailers/

My proposed design , shown on the main page as a sketch, would be very good for 240d owners because the top pivots down for a lower wind profile...

here is the link to the links ..
