What acceptable adhesive for rear 123 sunroof seal

My rear sunrroof seal on the 85TD is crumbling and I intend to replace it with the OE seal I have in stock bought for the 85SD that is getting painted.

What is a strong long lasting adhesive? I happen to have some Weldwood contact cement in the tool box but I doubt that will hold up.

I'm trying to make all repairs last 20 years. They will be someone else's problem in 2040. Sorry to realize & admit but likely true.

Seems you might need something to keep the thing from crumbling as much as hold it in place.

I bought a tube of 3m window caulk after seeing a window guy use the stuff to seal the front windshield on my 84SD. That stuff sealed the windshield and served as a mastic too.

You might want to look into it.

I have always used 3M Yellow Super Weather Strip and Gasket Adhesive for sunroof and trunk seals and hood pads. It lasts for decades.

Adhesive needs to be on just the ends of the sunroof seal.

It depends on how close the fit is. I use 3M 847 High Performance Rubber and Gasket Adhesive. It can tale the heat.
However 5 fluid ounces/14mL
The tube is about 2 inches in diameter and 7.5 inches long and sells for around $18 per each tube on eBay. Sometimes you can get it for much less.

It can be used as a contact cement if you coat both sides and let it dry some and once stuck together stays in place for assembly.

Heat cures it faster and it can take up to 400 degrees F.

I have never seen it selling over the counter at any auto parts stores. My first experience with it was at the naval ship yard where I once worked.

It is also good for some shoe repairs like soles that are becoming delaminated.

Repeat of what he said earlier. Only the ends of the seal need adhesive. I use 3M Weatherseal Adhesive, but I don't think the choice is very critical.

I bought the black 3M super weatherstrip adhesive and am off to install the rear seal. Hopefully the existing seal will come off easily and the new one won't be too thick. I'll consider gluing only the ends.

The front seal that came on the car and was leaking before I replaced it was too thick as commonly reported as aftermarket and was holding the roof open. I wire brushed and used POR 15 on the rusty metal lip that seats the front seal and think it's holding the OE seal well enough. Wire brushes and cheap paint brushes were bought at Harbor Freight.

Problem solved and no glue needed at all

There is a groove at the back of the sunroof to hold the rear seal. You force the seal into the groove and you're done. It's likely that some type of lbe will be needed to get it installed.

I have rust just starting to form and am in the process of applying POR to it.

FWIW, the seal was cracked on the top but still intact on the bottom. It was brittle and broke apart easily but would have stayed a while longer if I hadn't messed with it. I got it in time to not have a big rust problem. Perhaps this should checked while the seals are still available.
