Air Cleaner Buffers

As I wait days for shipping information to even be posted, I'm wondering, how about an internal spring with opposing threaded ends encased in rubber? I'd rather pay $30 once than $2 endlessly.
Has anyone tried to improve on these things?

There is quite a bit on this in the forum. I assume you are talking about the rubber buffers for the air cleaner. On my '81 300SD I used to replace these all the time.

I finally resolved it by removing both threaded end plates and drilling a hole through a naked rubber buffer. Ran a long bolt through it with a washer, installed a washer and nut on the other end. Did same with other two. Presto, fixed. I have not had to replace one in years.

I learned something about the bracket while messing around trying things. Long screws threaded in the holes look like Marty Feldman. They must be pulling the buffers all out of shape from the moment they're installed. It always took a little wiggling, but I didn't realize it was that bad. No wonder they tear apart after a year.

There should not be any stress on the original buffers when you install them; they fit perfectly and the air filter hole lines up perfectly with the threaded stud. You will note that there are two sets of holes; maybe you have been using the wrong set of holes.

In any event a long bolt through a naked buffer will solve your problem.

No, definitely the right holes, just a bit off. Did you hear that one about the guy who had his face torn off by an angry chimp? They restored his eyelids using his foreskin. He can see just fine, but he's cockeyed.
The tabs on the bracket extend a little, allowing for manipulation. I should have checked it before I installed it and adjusted it as needed.

One of the fixes if you buffers and bracket are good is to put about an 8 inch section of 3/4 or 1 inch heater hose between the Air Filter Housing and the intake manifold.

Next is to fix what is causing it to sake so much.

This a big contributor to your problem. Drill out the mounting holes a little bit. The filter can base should drop right into place. If there is any side shear stress on the mounts, they will tear when vibrating. I did this on mine and have not had to change a mount since.

What I mean is that they were off in terms of direction, not location. I needed to bend the wings of the bracket (by the manifold) inward so that the screws all stand vertical instead of pointing away from each other.
I could show this with one photo instead of three posts over two days. Why can't I post pictures here? I am not going to set up a damn photobucket account and go back and forth posting links.

Because this webforum is from ~1999. Your pictures are either too large in dimensions or file size, or you're trying to upload from a phone. Resize to a maximum of 1280x1024 pixels and/or upload from a computer and it works fine.

Maybe your photo is too big. Resize it to (I think) 350x450 and it should upload to the forum fine. Also you can only upload the same pic one time.

When I click the 'insert image' icon, a pop-up asks me for the URL.

A few cars have these in the silencer bracket to stop noise in the car . Try an exhaust fitting garage. They will have some you can use .

Post Endless Broken Air Cleaner Mounts & T Brackets

I recenlty tried the bit of rubber jammed between the air filter can and the rocker box, so far so good .

Both my OM616's broke both the rubbers and T brackets repeatedly over the decades, I tried original M-B rubber mounta, they last longer but still shear every few years .

I used an old shock absorber rubber do-nut , it's remaine stuffed in there with no problems for six months so far....

Another guy here used the 1/2 of a broken rubber buffer, he measured and drilled a 6MM hole in the engine side of the air cleaner can and screwed the old rubber buffer to it, says it works well .
