Sweet looking 79 SD almost sold on Ebay

I've been drooling over this car for several days; if I wasn't moving soon I'd be down there tomorrow test driving it.... a 1979 300SD with 98783 Miles, light blue, good body (they say), VIN 11612012003553.

It's at a used car dealership maybe an hour or so away. I have no relationship to the place, other than having lusted after several of their cars over the last week or so.

I can see where MB dieseling can be an addiction; suddenly I find myself wanting a W116 SD, a W123 wagon, an SDL, an 87 TDT, and one of the new Freightliner Sprinters. I'd probably sell the SD, just for a change.

Edited... oops forgot the URL...

Yes!
I have been lookin at it too (on e-bay that is) and I wonder why no one mentioned it. I thought everyone else saw something I didnt't.. :p

It is a beautiful W116. There is a decent 116 in my parking garage. It's brown and its ccondition is just ugly. Very neglected. However the body is VERY straight!

Maybe if the owner puts it up on sale I'll have a look!

Does anyone know what the switch is beneath the headlight indicator and the battery light? I have this same car (mine's a 1980) and do not have that.

The switch is not a switch. Its a knob that you turn to increase the idle speed. '78 and '79 had them but the '80 didn't.

Older MB Diesels like 190D, 220D, and 240D all had them. It was used to keep the engine running smooth when it was cold.

Hi,

I had my nephew, who lives in the area where this car was from, go and look it over for me. The day he stopped at the dealership (last Weds) it was raining. The rear footwells were completely soaked, with a couple of inches of water in one; the Tex finish on the seats was cracked extensively; the passenger side of the rear seat was severely devoid of padding; the tires were bad; A/C did not work; there was a large crack in the dashboard (which I believe was cleverly hidden by the steering wheel in the photo); and the antenna didn't go up all the way as it appeared to be bent. Also, there was some bubbling in the paint (future rust-through).
As for the good things, the engine started fairly well and didn't smoke; the window regulators were apparently ok as all four windows went up and down; all the guages worked; He didn't have time to take it for a test-drive, so I can't say anything about the steering, suspension, etc.

Just thought you'd like to know.
Also, I'd like to mention a special thanks to TXBill for all his help! You're a credit to this forum!

Going Going Gone

Well that blue one went for around 3500 bucks. I can see why. It has that rare optional rear passenger foot bath feature Dave's nephew noticed.

I was looking at that one too.

That brown one is nice.

Dave thanks for the scoop. I was trying to get there to look at it but was a bit afraid I would make an impuse buy that I would soon regret. A great 10-footer.

Hey Rob, where you movin? Are you still gonna be close enough to come to another NJ meet if we have one?

l8r,
James

Thanks for the cool "new" SD link... maybe the brown one doesn't come with the built-in pond

I am moving locally, pretty much, just a few miles away, to Northampton PA. Still close enough to get to NJ meets, and I might even wash my car before I show up next time

Bob, Glad you're staying local

I washed my car before the last meet, but I'll make sure that I take a shower this time.

PS< Dave, the link pointed to a true collectors item, an 8 cyl 300SD.

I think that additional 3 cylinders was an after-market mod.

Must have something to do with the 0.0 Litre engine.

Here's another one.. right here in Mass. If I didn't have a Benz yet I'd probably jump on this one!

Holson,
How about picking it up for me and then I'll run out some day and pick it up, you can store it right?...
That's a beaut!!!

If I had the time or lived a little closer then I'd really get serious about that one. I love the 240 but that would make a nice addition.

damn... $5K and still reserve not met.
There is already a pretty nice 300SD in my building's garage. It'd be cool if I add this seemingly mint 300SD!
