Wheel hub spacer tube - axle swap.
Installing aftermarket GSP axles on 85 300D.
The diff end original spacers fitted fine. No end play. However, at the hub end, the splines did not go in far enough when the original bolts, washers and spacer tubes were used. Without the tubes, the spline could be pulled into the hub. So it looks like we will have to shorten the spacer tubes. But this seems strange seeing that the bolts and spacer tubes are out of those same hubs. We never measured that end because it looked much same as several old axles we had lying around. After a bit more searching, I found this post:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/1954446-post11.html Seems like this problem is not that uncommon. Car is on hoist. I would have liked to see wheels jacked up so axles are horizontal and in their shortest position. Then see if the splines can be pushed into place. I don't like the idea of using the 8mm bolt to pull them in, because only part of the threads might be engaged. My helper/friend has cut the spacers 3mm shorter and now says that everything is good. However, I can't see how cutting the spacers down helped or should be done, because they are original from those hubs and should fit correctly. But he has rechecked with the originals and axles don't pull up tight. Hard to understand, for me anyway! Something different about the aftermarket axles?
