How to diagnose governor problems? Parts? 722.3xx
So I'm trying to sort out if my governor is causing my current nightmare. 82 300D with a 722.315 won't shift into 3 or 4. No flaring.
So many posts reference the governor being the issue with this problem. I tried to pull it to examine, but could not for the life of me get it out. Loosened the nut, turned the axial support, and still the governor just wiggles a bit but is nowhere near coming out. I "tested" it in place by depressing the lever as shown below: I feel the gears move when I do that and the levers pop right back up when I release it, does that mean its ok? Several folks have said that small plastic gears were they issue and they got them inexpensively from the dealer. I cannot find a replacement governor or parts for sale anywhere. The car is currently 5 hours away and I would like to have some replacement parts on hand before I drive up to try and get it going. Any help with this is greatly appreciated, I see it referenced often, but not discussed in detail I remembered ps2cho's post "stuck on the side of the highway, no 3rd or 4th" post from 10 or so years ago and looked through there but couldn't get the info I need. For context: I'm having the 2/3 nightmare and have been combing the forums. I have ruled out vacuum issues, VCV good, modulator is good (replaced), checked every line, etc. Driving with all the vacuum disconnected doesn't give me my gears back. Disconnected the kickdown at both the pedal and the trans (best way to troubleshoot this? I suppose it could be stuck open (or closed, which is it meant to be when not activated?) I appreciate any help. If you have a governor to sell, I'll take that too! LBJ

The Transmission is made by ZF. So you could look for parts outside of Mercedes.

I usually do not read the transmission threads where someone has gone into them. So I don't know about what parts should be replaced on the Governor.
Other then changing filters the only transmission work I have done is changing the B2 Piston and related parts. I am attaching a picture. I have a copy of the ASTG transmission manual. It has that you need to turn the Governor in the position shown and there is a retaining ring (snap-ring) which I pointed the red arrows at in the picture. There also is another sort of arm that you have to pivot out of the way that may lock the Governor in. It is not clear from the illustration if it is part of the secondary pump or the Governor. See the 2nd attached picture. From what I read you need to squeeze the ring together. There is a locating pin on one side of the Governor when you assemble it. They have new and used ASTG Manuals on eBay and there is also a CD which used to be around $30 maybe plus shipping. People have said it is not as good as it could be but I bought one when one came up cheap on eBay believing it is better then nothing. On mine the manual is 722.3-722.4 I don't have the sites but I have also seen the ASTG Manual online and some other companies. ZF Transmissions are used on other Euro Cars. Just do a search for ZF Transmission Parts.

When I rebuilt that transmission on my Chevy Astro Van there was some youtube vids and a lot of other how to do stuff that was invaluable on the internet. Maybe not as much for the ZFs but it could be a good idea to search.
