FSM question, firewall accelerator linkage answer

Hello,

The question:
I recently purchased a 1982 300D. I accessed the FSM on the Star Tekinfo site, but the photographs are horrible. I purchased the maintenance manual in PDF form and the photos are just as bad. Are the photos on the CDs any better? Anyone know where good photographs can be had short of paper FSMs?

Firewall accelerator linkage answer:

I was cleaning up and lubing the throttle linkages, and when I took the mount for the pedal linkage off of the firewall the ball just fell apart. I've searched hi and lo, I even tried amazon and was refunded twice because the part wasn't in stock ( even though they listed 26 in stock when I ordered and they sill list some in stock as of a few days ago ) but it seems like they can't be had.

So, I had to make one. MB purists should probably stop reading now.

I used a skate board wheel. The shaft that slides into the wheel bearings was just under 8mm, .310", so it fits into the 5/16 ID bearings with almost no slop. I have a metal lathe, so I just kept whittling away at it until it was just a skösh oversize and a nice tight fit when the bolts on the bracket are tightened down. The difference in acceleration is pretty dramatic.

Does anyone know the dimensions of that ball? Does anyone see any potential problems I'm overlooking? Looks to me like they used a ball because the shaft that fits into it does not go straight out from the firewall, it's more like off to the left and down a bit.

I intend to pull it out and de-rust the bracket and paint the inside of the firewall part of the bracket since the paint is all dissolved. I can measure it then if anyone needs the dimensions.

Cool! IN this case the work around looks better than the factory part!

I bought a new one last year on eBay. Did Pelican Parts have it?

And yes the Plastic Ball can crumble away but more frequently the inner part pulls out of it. A less frequent failure area is the rubber part.

Other years and models may have different types.

People keep speaking of 3-D printers. Perhaps another type of plastic will work.

Pelican parts was out of stock. Every place I've checked is out of stock, and I made a few inquiries and was told it is NLA. I didn't inquire at Pelican though.

I did a job for a guy who used to work for MB, gave him the model # of the car and the part # I'm looking for, and he was contacting some parts guys he knows, but haven't heard back. Haven't gone to the dealer.

I'm going to get some new skate board wheels with better rubber and make another one or two, someday. I have a long list of things on top of thatto get to, so until it falls apart, it's staying.

on another note, I did order a throttle cable part # 1233001430 by mistake ( throttle linkage part is 1233001340 ) that came special from Germany . If anyone needs one, I might trade it for some sunviser clips and maybe one of those plastic glove box adjustment screws.
Seriously, I would if the sunvisor clips are blue.

I just looked on Amazon
Set of 2 Accelerator Linkage Mount Genuine 1233001340 Mercedes Benz W123 240D 300CD 300D 300TD 2000 - 2006
$123.73 & FREE Shipping 7 instock

Also there is another part number which is for westpack which some parts sellers use- W133-161-1617422

Note that when I search for stuff I frequently use image.google.com and it will show pics of a item and then look up the various sellers. 3 I looked at had no stock. The amazon ad where one was being sold had out of stock.

Yeah, I ordered those twice, from 2 different sellers but the supplier is the same, B2C auto parts and I was refunded both times because they weren't in stock.
I don't know who they're selling them to, but they aren't selling them to me.
Maybe I cut them off in traffic one day or something.

There is differences in ads from the same company. The same parts place had 2 different ads. One said out of stock the other said they had 10 in stock.
