Copper Spray OM617 HG??
I have a Reinz composite head gasket for the Om617 turbo. I am not decking the block or touching it, other than cleaning old gasket off. Will be resurfacing the head if necessary. It’s super thin already, so might not if it’s already straight.
This HG is composite, definitely NOT an MLS gasket. However, it’s slippery. Feels like it has a Teflon coating. I’m hesitant to spray copper gasket over this because it would negate any benefit from this. Spray with copper or not??? |

The head gasket is already coated, you"re not to over spray.

Many years ago I had a Peugeot Diesel that repeated failed head gaskets. We applied several coats of K&W CopperKote and that solved the issue. I can't recall if that used a steel shim gasket, a composite gasket, or ? but it definitely did the trick. Not sure how that tip applies to a M-B.

Mercedes Benz say"s not to over spray.
Years ago when head gaskets were single layer steel and no sealer applied it was a good idea to use a sealer like CopperKote. The sealer/adhesive has already been applied. |

I don't think you are going to find any factory service manual that tells you to spay on something like copper-coat. I reused the head gasket on my Volvo Diesel and I sprayed it with a lot of the copper-coat. The reason for the reuse is because I lacked the money to spend $45 for a new head gasket set.

I’m kinda thinking the same as Herc.
I’ve read that some HGs are Teflon coated to let the gasket “slide” when the motor heats/cools. Regardless, the gasket clearly has some kinda surface finish that’s super smooth and slippery, which I’m hesitant to defeat |

I’ve used the spray. Mainly due to block corrosion that left the deck surface pitted. Never had any issues.

Only repeating what those German companies have said about their head gaskets.
Do a Google search, find out what is now possible, this information was given a number of years ago. |
