1981 300TD 717.400 Swap

Hello peach parts members. 9 years ago I had the dream of owning a OM617A/ Getrag 717.400 combo. My dream is finally coming to fruition with one little hurdle. I just picked up a 1981 300TD and I have the getrag 717.400 transmission and all other peripherals to perform the swap. It seems everything will be straight forward BESIDES the speedometer. I had my vehicle on the lift today and observed that it is equipped with an electronic output speed sensor. It appears I purchased the ONLY model year 123 with an electronic speed sensor thus adding a layer of difficulty to the manual swap. The getrag transmission has a cavity for an output speed sensor.

My questions to the experienced forum members are:
Can I simply remove the back of the transmission and machine the cavity to accept the speed sensor from the automatic transmission? Does the 717.400 have a tone wheel so the sensor can make a signal? If it does not have a tone wheel, does anyone have a part number from a 717.402, if so is it compatible inside of my 717.400? If the 717.400 can not be equipped with a tone wheel, has anyone used the mechanical cable to digital converter boxes?

I did some searching around and found this thread

I can always weld 4 tabs to the driveshaft but prefer to set this up as close to factory as possible.

Thanks for any help!
