Hello fellow peachparts members.
9 years ago I dreamed of owning a OM617A/ 717.400 combination. I actually found a 5 speed for sale on eBay and purchesed it. Shortly after, I found a 1981 300TD with 79K original miles on BAT. I have both now in my possession so now it is time to perform the swap. There is one hurdle - I purchased the only model W123 equipped with an electornic speedometer thus adding a layer of difficulty to this process.
Here are my questions to the experienced peachparts members:
Does the 717.400 have a tone wheel outfitted by default so the speed sensor can produce signal?
If the 717.400 does not have a tone wheel, can I install one from a 717.402 and simply machine the cavity to accept the speed sensor?
I did find a thread (
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/312801-mechanical-electronic-speedometer-conversion.html) where one member welded 4 pieces of steel to his driveshaft to simulate the pulses of a tone wheel. I can do this, but I prefer to keep the install as close to factory as possible.
Here are images of the car and transmission swap components.
