All terrain tires for W123 300TD: General Grabber AT/X? Tire Recappers Rambler?

I live in the middle of nowhere and spend more time driving on wet dirt and loose gravel than on dry pavement. I just bought a set of rims so that I can have have a set of touring tires as well as a set of all terrain tires.

So far, the all terrain tires that have caught my eye are:

Tire Cappers "Rambler AT".
26" x 7" (listed as 7" and also as 195/75, though a 7" would be 178mm, so something is off).
https://www.tirerecappers.com/tires/all-terrain-tires/lt19575r14-retread-rambler-at/

General "Grabber A/TX".
27" x 8.6" (roughly a 215/75 if my math is straight).

I'd prefer the Grabber as it has very good reviews and is a new (non-retread) tire. I'm concerned that it's so tall I might hit a fender, and so wide I might hit a tie rod. The Rambler seems well regarded, but I'm lukewarm on buying a retread. I'm rolling on 205/70 touring tires right now, and the size seems fine but the off-road traction is very poor.

Thoughts on these tires?

I'm open to any other suggestions! I'm in USA, for what that's worth.

Cheers, and thanks.

No experience with either of those tires, but the Grabber is proven and well regarded, and available with a severe snow/3 peak mountain snowflake rating. That would get the nod from me.

I'm running Treadwright Guard Dogs now, also a retread. Balanced well, no defects. Probably won't be going with them again, but that's got nothing to do with them being retreads - they're just stupid loud as they wear.

My Treadwrights have Kedge grip, crushed walnut shell and glass. They act as teeny studs when they start wearing through, and when the particles pop out, they act like little sipes. Very pleased with them, and it looks like Tire Recappers offers something similar with acorn shell. Would 100% recommend paying extra for that feature if snow or ice is going to be something you're encountering.

While we're on the subject of tires, I'm looking for a unicorn. If anyone knows of a severe snow/3pmsf rated mud terrain tire, please let me know. Lots of all terrains with the severe snow rating, but the only severe snow rated mud terrain I found is the Treadwright Guard Dogs that I'm running now. Might just get another set and replace them when they get too noisy.

The Goodyear Wrangler caught my eye too, though at $200+ per tire I'm very unlikely to buy them. Interestingly, they appear to have *exactly* the same tread as the retreaded "Rambler" from Tire Cappers.

At the moment I'm leaning toward putting the 27" x 8.6" (215/75) General Grabbers on the back, and the Tire Cappers "Rambler AT" 26" x 7" (195/75) on the front. I feel pretty sure the larger Grabber's will fit fine in the back, and that the Rambler's will be fine in the front.

Or maybe just Ramblers on all 4 corners.

I've heard a single report of using the Grabber's on the front, and they apparently do rub the tie rod and fender a bit unfortunately.

Well I bit the bullet and ordered a set of 4 of the Tire Recappers "Rambler" retreads. I did pay $15 extra per tire for the Winter Traction which is crushed acorns added to the rubber. It'll probably be a week or more before I get them, get them mounted on the new rims, and have any opinion on them. I'll post pictures and a review!

Great, looking forward to hearing how you like them.

Tire Recapper's "Backwoods" tire looks exactly like my Guard Dogs.

Shame on me for forgetting to post a review. Thanks for the nudge.

I've been rolling on the Ramblers for the last six months. The traction is very much improved versus the previous tires (Les Schwab's finest 205/70/14's). I was a bit concerned that since these are high(er) pressure tires, that the ride quality would become rougher. I didn't notice any change. I was also concerned that they're be noisier. They do seem a bit noisier, but not in a bothersome way. I'm 100% satisfied and I'm sure I'll buy another set when I wear these down.
