New Injector Nozzles: To Purge or not to Purge

Greetings all,

Due to a leak around injector #5 on my '84 300D Euro, I've purchased a set of Monark 261 for the injectors which are all being rebuilt by Greazzer, along with the lift pump.

I would have loved to diesel purge with the old injectors on the car but the leak was worrying. My question is simply is it okay to do a diesel purge with the newly installed injectors on the car with the old filters on or should I wait till they settle in before purging?

I have new fuel filters standing by as well. Thanks for the advice!

I would post that question to Greazzer.

Personally I say no because the main purpose of the purge is to clean the Injector Nozzles and your Injector nozzles are new and clean.

Is there anything inside of the Fuel Injection Pump Housing that a Purge would clean out? I guess that is a maybe.
Personally I think that would be better dealt with by adding a fuel injection cleaner to the Fuel Tank and let it gradually work.

When I pulled my 190 something thousand mile Injectors with worn out nozzles out of my engine there was no abnormal build up inside of the pre-combustion chambers so I doubt if the purge helps there.

I always thought the purge was more for the injection pump vs. nozzles specifically but hey, I learn more every day.

I suppose it depends on what has gone through the Injection Pump.

See the attached picture. The original Injector Nozzles had tiny little drilled passages in them. In my own original nozzles those passages were entirely plugged solid with carbon.

My though was it would take periodic purges to keep those passages free of carbon buildup. That is why I think the purge is mainly for the Injectors.

Just diesel. No signs of waste oil used. That said, when I last purged 10K miles ago, the returning purge was very dark in colour.

The nozzles have been replaced a atleast once as they lacked the additional hole you described. If #5 wasn't leaking, I probably would not have rebuilt them. Now, after Greazer's finished with them, I'll know that they are set for another decade or two.

Some people recommend replacing the main fuel filter after diesel purge because the process dislocates dirt from the inside of IP. Now that I think about it, it may be due (mine has 15k miles).

Are you talking about the plastic juice bottle purge with two containers of purge?

Yes, that's the one. I try to replace filters after I do it.

Ideally run the two pints with new filters and your old injectors and after you run both pints then replace both filters again with new O-rings and then rebuild your injectors and install the rebuilt injectors. You really do not need purge with rebuilt injectors but running the purge you should see the crap being dislodged in the clear juice bottle. Your first round of new filters is sacrificial to grab any crap dislodged. Running purge before you rebuild injectors ensures you don’t push any junk to the rebuilt injectors I would ream the glow plug holes after the purge also.
