w124 and the OM603
I was wondering...
I have a 124 with the OM602.962. If that engine were to fail, what kind of PITA would it be to swap in an om603, like was used in 1987?

Quote:
The 602 962 looks to have similar intake routing as the 603 turbos, unlike the NA cars that have the air cleaner positioned near the intake manifold. |

You already have the superior engine. The 602 is the spiritual successor to the 617.

The swap shouldn't be difficult, my car had it done. There are some electrical differences that you need to be careful about (Aux fan controlled by a sensor and not a switch for example).
Lol. |

Agreed. The 602 (non turbo) is always found at the top of longevity of engines lists.

If you're going to the trouble of an engine swap, why not go 606 superturbo? 606 bolts right in, add a 7.5mm pump and upgraded turbo and you have a 400 hp monster that still returns 30+ mpg. That's what I'd do anyways. Just curious, why the 603 instead?

Far cheaper (junkyard price vs $1500-$3k), don't have to worry about a stronger transmission, no stuck glow plugs, etc.

$3k would be just for the pump and a controller for the 722.6

I've been daydreaming about a 647 swap into a 124 300D 2.5 Paired with a 722.6, would be a hell of a combo.

Cheaper and you can always super turbo the 603

You could run a stock OM603 pump and 722.3 or manual probably but yeah that's also a good point. I have 3 #22 heads sitting on the shelf too so that kinda helps with the worst of the OM603 issues for me too. |

I was just curious. The swaps do sound like fun, though.

Just make sure to find a 603 with a good cyl head.

#17, #18, #20, and #22 are the best heads for a 603 engine
