If you take the shift linkages off, you can play with the 3 input arms. to select a gear, all the other arms must be in neutral (middle position) If you get it out of 4, you should be able to get it into any of the other gears.

Still suspect a loose input arm.
What is an input arm?

I think he talks about the levers on the side of the transmission that operate the selector forks.

You can only have one in gear at a time.

If you have 2 of them in gear at a time then that will jam the transmission completly.

Yes, exactly what I'm saying, and if it's loose the shift linkage will not be able to pull it out of gear with the normal range of motion. You have to get under the car and put it in the neutral position (straight up or down, depending)

don't give up OP you will be amazed what you yourself can do with a few wrenches and a jack. You could change out the whole transmission by your self in a weekend.

And from what I'm reading and what your saying it really sounds like this something simple that simply has to do with the gear selector being jammed up

ya I read that and I'm agreeing with you.

I'm more just emphasizing the point that op needs to get that car up on some stands and turn some wrenches and pretty much no matter what the problem will be solved in a day or 2. he kinda started to state that this was too big of job for him and or doesn't have time or space for a long term project. before he even tried to do anything other than look under the car

The car is already up on ramps and I've already been under there to look but cannot see anything untoward. I'll have my wife try to move the shifter while I'm under there looking later today and hopefully will be able to see something. I'm aware of the supposedly simple nature of removing the transmission but if I do that and then find a major problem I'm not likely going to be in a position to fix it.

I do not want to junk the car. But the transmssion is just the latest in several major issues it has. Rear end has severe popping and banging probably requiring new axle shafts. Engine has severe vibration at all speeds and very poor fuel consumption, (averages 26mpg's compared to my previous ones 33) indicating work is needed on the injection system etc at least assuming the motor itself is not severely worn.

Car was badly repaired from a rear end hit years ago. Unfortunately this is not a pristine 240D. I love the car but so many issues add up. Anyway. Like I said, I'm going to go back under there again today and takea closer look.

- Peter.

Good luck. There are running driving 240 s out there but you'll have to pay up for a nice one.

Well. 'pon inspection looks like the middle of the three rods is jammed. I'm assuming that's the 4th gear one. I'm going to see if I can disconnect the clips where the shifter attaches to the rods up in the transmission tunnel and see if the shifter moves freely then. If it does I guess the problem is internal to the gears.

Does the "middle" rod connect to the forward arm on the transmission? If so, remove the clip from the rod at the transmission arm. The rod, and its lever in the selector should move freely.
